Job summary

Red Bull Powertrains invites ambitious undergraduates to join our Design Engineering teams for a 1-year placement in Milton Keynes. You will work hands-on on the power unit systems, from concepts through testing, with exposure to CAD, simulations and real-world builds.

You'll contribute to the design and development of high‑performance components, analyse data, and document insights for technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience from at least one year of undergraduate study in engineering, mathematics or physics.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles and ability to apply mathematical methods to problems.
  • Familiarity with CAD/FEA/CFD or system modelling (training provided).
  • Experience with data from simulations or tests and ability to prepare technical documentation.
  • Ability to break complex problems into fundamental principles.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to all stages of the engineering process from conceptual design to live testing.
  • Tackle technical problems from first principles and understand the contributing physics.
  • Demonstrate passion for engineering through projects or placements.
  • Show a positive, can-do attitude and willingness to learn new skills.
  • Follow best practices and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Communicate effectively within a team.

Job description

In-house dyno facilities Applying engineering design principles using tools such as CAD and rapid manufacturing techniques to develop real Power Unit components Developing fixtures, jigs, and assemblies to support testing, with hands‑on involvement in builds, upgrades, and component installations Designing and executing measurement tests, performing failure mode analysis, and using results to propose improvements and validate new designs Developing and applying precision instrumentation to capture and analyse the Power Unit's operating environment at microsecond-level resolution Building and validating numerical simulations to maximise performance and reliability Interpreting and reporting data through technical documentation and presenting insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders Collaborating closely with all the Technical and Manufacturing teams to deliver world‑class engineering solutions Gaining direct exposure to the 2027 Formula 1 season and contributing to the future of Red Bull Powertrains

Expected knowledge, experience & attributes of the successful candidates:

Red Bull Powertrains are offering multiple year‑long placement opportunities within our Design Engineering teams. In these hands‑on roles you will be immersed into the heart of our state‑of‑the‑art Technical and Manufacturing facilities where we drive engineering and innovation to the limit to develop cutting‑edge Formula 1 power units. Pushing boundaries is in our DNA! As a placement student, you’ll work directly on the design and development of critical systems within the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) & Energy Recovery System (ERS) including the battery, electronics, motor‑generator unit (MGU‑K), turbo and chassis integration. You’ll be part of a team that creates high‑performance mechanical components, including advanced cooling systems, all designed to operate within the tight packaging constraints of an F1 car.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Contribute to all stages of the engineering process from conceptual design, through manufacturing reviews, to live testing on our
  • technical problems down to fundamental principles, and understand the contributing physics
  • Ability to demonstrate a genuine passion for engineering through involvement in extra‑curricular projects, previous placements, or work experience
  • Positive, can‑do, attitude and willingness to learn new skills
  • Ability to follow best practice and work on multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Excellent communication skills and experience working in a team environment

The placement will be for 1 year, starting July 2027.
