Fairport Tunnelling Technologies (FTT) became a newly established division of Fairport Engineering Limited in 2021. Fairport Engineering Limited have now been acquired by pxGroup and as a result FTT has now become pxFairport.

We are an Engineering and Projects Delivery business specialising in the design, installation, management and consultancy of bulk material handling systems across a number of sectors, with specific expertise in tunnelling, aggregates and ports. With long standing industry expertise, our recent history includes successfully delivering projects in the UK, Europe and Asian markets.

The Opportunity

We are now recruiting for a Design Engineer (Tekla Structures) to join the team based from either our Adlington or Sunderland office. The Design Engineer will work on overall process plant, conveyor and associated equipment design for the bulk material handling industry. The Design Engineer will work closely with the wider engineering team, project management and procurement teams to ensure that products meet customer needs whilst focusing on quality, cost, and delivery.

Work includes equipment and structural layouts, equipment and structural general arrangements and detailed manufacturing drawings. A key element of this role is the design and integration of mechanical / equipment models with structural models to ensure a complete and accurate design solution. An additional focus is on using standard equipment designs and integrating this into the Tekla library to improve the speed at which designs can be produced.

Key Responsibilities

  • The Design Engineer (Tekla) will work on overall process plant, conveyor and associated equipment design for the bulk material handling industry.
  • The Design Engineer will work closely with the wider engineering team, project management and procurement teams to ensure that products meet customer needs whilst focusing on quality, cost, and delivery.
  • A key element of this role is the design and integration of mechanical / equipment models with structural models to ensure a complete and accurate design solution.
  • Using standard equipment designs and integrating this into the Tekla library to improve the speed at which designs can be produced.
  • Utilise computer-aided design (Tekla Structures, AutoCAD) software to create drawings and schematics of parts, assemblies, and technical documents.
  • Produce structural concepts, designs and detailed models, integrating equipment from suppliers and wider design team in 3D space.
  • Produce detailed structural assemblies and detailed drawing packs for manufacturing. Develop drawings from notes, sketches, existing drawings, design concepts, verbal instruction, and engineering specifications.
  • Document updates to designs and ensure any changes are recorded in accordance with Fairport’s engineering change procedure.
  • Promote standard design and working towards the 80% reuse and 20% new Provide support and assistance to project engineers as required to suit the needs of the project Assist the Design Office Manager and Group Head of Design “cost out” / value engineering of current designs and components Carry out interface checking of the mechanical and structural teams’ models.
  • Collaborate with the project team in design reviews and follow up on actions Ensure that all work conforms to the latest industry standards (BS, ISO) Support the Design Office Manager and Group Head of Design with KPI driven performance measures, Engineering On-time delivery, Target Hours, First time right, Standardisation, Recovery Rate.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • HNC in mechanical engineering
  • Proficient in Tekla Structures, modelling, interfacing and detailing.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD 2D drawing package
  • Comprehensive knowledge in design/drawing standards
  • Understanding of CE /UKCA regulations including design risk assessments
  • An understanding of manufacturing processes, in particular medium to heavy fabrication
