Job description

This may suit someone with 4 or 5 years experience looking for a step up/career move into a role with more varied high-precision engineering projects (across industries such as Oil & Gas, Nuclear and Defence) joining a team of 5 Design Engineers.

We are seeking a skilled Design Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a background in Design for Manufacturing (DfM), 3D modelling, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

Based in the Drawing office reporting to the Technical Manager, the Design Engineer will work closely with internal teams and external clients to develop innovative, manufacturable, and cost-effective engineering solutions. The role requires practical manufacturing knowledge, CAD expertise, and structural stress analysis skills to ensure product reliability and performance.

Key Responsibilities

Project Involvement & Quality Control:

  1. Participate in project-specific meetings, contract quality initiatives, and workshops.
  2. Oversee and approve the technical output of the department, ensuring compliance with specifications, technical requirements, and regulatory standards.
  3. Participate in contract status reviews, design reviews, and supplier progress reviews, ensuring timely action closure.

Design & Engineering Solutions:

  1. Apply design intelligence to develop innovative solutions that meet strategic, technical, and engineering requirements.
  2. Support the drawing review process to understand customer requirements.
  3. Create internal manufacturing drawings and sub-tier condition of supply drawings.
  4. Manage and control design change processes efficiently.
  5. Ensure designs are optimized (avoiding excessive over or under-engineering) with a focus on purpose, reliability, and manufacturability.

Manufacturing Support & Feasibility Analysis:

  1. Support the production department and supply chain in analysing designs for manufacturability.
  2. Generate 3D models, CAD geometry, and 3D-printed prototypes to assist in design validation.
  3. Design project-specific jigs, fixtures, and lifting equipment in collaboration with the production department.
  4. Conduct Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and structural stress analysis to ensure designs meet performance and safety requirements.
  5. Deliver high-quality, detailed drawings in accordance with BS8888 and other industry standards, managing revisions as needed.
