Job summary

Expleo in Belfast is seeking a Design Engineer to contribute to concept vessel design, hull, and marine systems. The role involves integrating 3D models and 2D drawings, and supporting decarbonisation and emerging technologies across global maritime programmes.

You will release models, develop routing schemes, and collaborate with customers and manufacturing teams. A HND in a relevant STEM field and professional engineering membership are valued, with a hybrid on-site 2-3 days per week.

Qualifications

• HND in STEM or equivalent naval/maritime design experience.
• Professional membership in an engineering institution (e.g., RINA, IMarEST, IMechE, IET).
• Post-graduate or equivalent experience in naval/commercial ship design, construction, or maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Develop and integrate 3D models and 2D drawings for marine systems, hull, and structures.
• Manage the release process for models and drawings with PLM systems.
• Develop routing schemes for mechanical and fluid systems within vessel constraints.
• Conduct checks to validate system integrity and regulatory compliance.
• Produce integration and manufacturing drawings to support assembly and production.
• Source and specify standard components for procurement and production needs.
• Investigate regulatory issues and develop practical engineering solutions.
• Interface with customers to discuss engineering solutions to complex problems.
• Support quality standards improvements within engineering and production information.

Overview

As a Design Engineer every day at Expleo will be out of the ordinary and will require you to be dynamic and responsive to changes in technology, innovation, and client requirements. You will have the opportunity to get involved in concept vessel design, complex engineering design, creation of new & innovative tools & processes, delivery of engineering consultancy services, and the development of decarbonisation solutions & other emerging technologies across a wide range of global maritime programmes. This role is being offered on a hybrid basis with 2-3 days on site in Belfast.

Responsibilities

• Apply & continue to develop a breadth of engineering skills, in the discipline of Marine Engineeringand where applicable, other related disciplines.
• Integrate 3D models and 2D drawings for various marine systems, hull, structures and outfitting, performing detailed checks and implement necessary modifications to ensure design accuracy and alignment.
• Manage the release process for models and drawings, maintaining version control within PLM systems.Develop routing schemes for mechanical and fluid systems, ensuring optimal layout within the vessel constraints.
• Conduct comprehensive engineering checks to validate system integrity and compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Produce detailed integration drawings and part-level manufacturing drawings to support system assembly and production processes.
• Source and specify standard mechanical components, such as pipe fittings, ensuring compatibility and availability for procurement and production needs.
• Investigate technical issues identified by regulatory bodies, developing practical engineering solutions to meet compliance standards.
• Deliver high quality solutions to our customers and clients.
• Investigate & solve complex technical problems in concept, basic and detailed design phases.
• Develop & maintain written technical and administrative procedures, standards,processes, practices, guidelines, and standards.
• Assist with the maintenance & improvement in quality standards of engineering, design, and production information.
• Interface directly with our customers and clients, representing our teams to discuss engineering solutions to complex problems.

Qualifications

• HND qualified in a relevant STEM discipline (e.g., Naval Architecture, Ship Science, Marine Technology, Marine Engineering), or equivalent experience in the naval and commercial ship design, construction, or maintenance domain.
• Professional member of a relevant engineering institution (e.g., RINA, IMarEST, IMechE, IET).

Desired skills

• An understanding of classification society rules, regulations, and standards in the design, construction, and in-service lifecycle phases.
• 3D modelling of components in 3DX (Dassault software).

Experience

• The successful candidate will ideally have post-graduate experience (or non-degree qualified) working in either the commercial or naval maritime domain.

• Experience of using Naval Architecture design (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MaxSurf, NAPA, Aveva, Paramarine, Orcaflex, MatLab, MS Excel).
• Experience of working in multi-company and engineering discipline teams with an ability to communicate effectively.
• Experience in a technical consulting environment, leading and/or supporting multiple engineering projects & customers.
