Design Development Engineers - Simulink

Air Sector is engaged in a critical role on the Dreadnought submarine programme to develop the functional design of the Active Vehicle Control System (AVCS), the system used to drive and manoeuvre the boat. The work uses Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) techniques at scale on a safety-critical system.

We currently have vacancies for Development Engineers within Mechanical, Actuation, Fluidic Systems, or Operator Assistance to be based at Brough.

You will be responsible for the functional design and development of control, management, or monitoring of Mechanical, Actuation, or Fluidic Systems, working within the AVC Functional Software organisation. Your role involves concept development, requirements definition, detailed design, and delivery.

The Dreadnought AVC programme operates a 'One Team' approach with partners BAE Systems' Submarines and Electronic Systems.

You should be a self-motivated, proactive individual capable of analyzing complex problems and working autonomously and in a structured manner. Effective communication skills are essential for liaising with stakeholders, including senior management.

You will be expected to provide technical guidance, review work outputs, and support professional development. Creativity, adaptability, and a proactive problem-solving approach are valued, along with a mindset for continuous improvement.

Key Responsibility Areas

The successful candidate will have experience across the Engineering Lifecycle, with desirable knowledge in Flight, Marine, or Mission Systems, including software development and modelling & simulation. The role offers significant opportunities for personal development within a high-profile product delivery team, especially in modelling, simulation, and systems engineering.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Understanding and capturing device and system control requirements.
  2. Developing Functional Architecture and interface definitions.
  3. Producing control model concepts, detailed design models, and test harnesses.
  4. Verifying and validating textual requirements for delivery.
  5. Documenting the design.
  6. Contributing to safety analysis.
  7. Maintaining communication across the 'One Team'.
  8. Developing and harmonizing processes per sector policies.
  9. Capturing Learning From Experience (LFE).
The Individual Requirements
  • Applicants must be UK Nationals due to the UK sovereign status of the programme.
  • Degree or equivalent in relevant STEM fields (e.g., Aeronautical, Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Maths).
  • Knowledge of the system engineering lifecycle and good practices.
  • 2-5 years’ experience in Mechanical, Actuation, Control, or Fluid Systems Engineering, preferably in marine or aerospace sectors.
  • Proficiency with Mathworks tools (Simulink and Test) for MBSE.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office; ability to learn additional tools.
  • Experience in guiding and coaching others.
  • Strong research skills for complex system data analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills for interfacing across teams and stakeholders.
  • Flexibility for on-site work and travel.
  • Experience in modelling, simulation, system testing, and safety engineering.
  • Knowledge of other modelling tools such as DOORS, SCADE, SysML.
  • Experience with engineering project management, including Agile methodologies.
