Job Description

Job Title: Design Connections Engineer

Location: London, Hybrid

Salary: Up to £60,000 + 10% bonus

About the Company

This organisation supports a wide variety of infrastructure projects - from new housing and commercial developments to EV charging schemes - by designing and managing safe, efficient, and future-ready electrical networks. The business is known for its collaborative approach, focus on engineering quality, and strong customer-first values.

About the Role

There is an exciting opportunity for a Design Connections Engineer to join their growing team. In this role, you will be responsible for reviewing and approving electrical connection designs submitted by Independent Connection Providers (ICPs) and other stakeholders. Covering low voltage (LV) and up to and including 11kV networks, your focus will be on ensuring all connections are technically robust, safe, compliant with G81 and regulatory standards, and aligned with internal policies.

You will work closely with both internal delivery teams and external clients to manage designs through the full lifecycle - from initial submission to post-energisation checks - playing a key role in ensuring seamless handovers and long-term operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and approve LV to 11kV design submissions for new and modified network connections.
  • Ensure all designs comply with industry regulations, including G81 standards and relevant licence conditions.
  • Provide expert guidance and support to customers and stakeholders throughout the design process.
  • Support the delivery and operations teams during project execution, including resolving technical queries and adapting plans to site-specific conditions.
  • Conduct compliance and competency checks prior to energisation to ensure installation quality and safety.
  • Maintain accurate asset data by updating internal systems with as-built records.
  • Gather feedback on design performance from operational teams and use this to inform continuous improvement.
  • Manage a high volume of design work while maintaining quality, accuracy, and customer satisfaction.

Key Requirements

  • ONC or HNC (or working towards) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of LV and 11kV networks, substations, transformers, switchgear, and protection systems.
  • Previous experience in electrical design within the distribution sector, ideally with exposure to IDNO/ICP environments.
  • Familiarity with relevant regulatory frameworks and standards (e.g. Ofgem, G81).
  • High levels of commercial awareness, problem-solving skills, and technical judgement.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage confidently with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong organisation and time management skills; able to handle multiple priorities effectively.
  • IT proficient, particularly with MS Office applications.

What’s on Offer

  • A competitive base salary of up to £60,000
  • Private Healthcare
  • Up to a 10% bonus
  • The opportunity to join a forward-thinking and growing team in the utilities sector.
  • A varied and impactful role with exposure to a broad range of connection projects across the UK.
  • Ongoing professional development and career progression opportunities.
  • A supportive and collaborative working environment where individual input is valued.
