Overview
Job title: Band 6 Department Sister/Charge Nurse – Emergency Department. Location: Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Band: 6. Salary: £38,682 to £46,580 per annum (pro rata as applicable). Contract: Permanent. Working pattern: Full-time or part-time.
We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual who is passionate about delivering high quality emergency care in a fast paced environment. The role includes leading and developing shift competencies and taking charge of an area of the department under supervision.
About the role
The Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse will be expected to work autonomously in all areas of the Emergency Department as required, with responsibilities for supervision and evaluation of nursing care within the department and overseeing areas to ensure high quality care is maintained. The post holder will manage patient flow in their assigned areas and maintain excellent communication with the shift leader, and take charge of the department as required with support from a senior nurse and appropriate competencies.
Responsibilities
- Work autonomously in all areas of the Emergency Department as required.
- Provide supervision and evaluation of nursing care within the department and oversee individual areas to ensure high quality care.
- Regularly manage the flow of patients through assigned areas and maintain excellent communication with the shift leader.
- Take charge of the department as required with the support of a senior nurse and use of competencies.
Clinical
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care for defined patient groups with a high level of acumen.
- Provide direct nursing care to named patients.
- Supervise care given to patients by junior staff, monitor standards and ensure adherence to evidence-based practice.
- Maintain accurate nursing documentation and liaise with the multidisciplinary team and community agencies.
- Contribute to the continuing development of the Emergency Department philosophy and demonstrate practice based on evidence and research.
- Assign patient care to team members ensuring high quality and continuity of care.
- Participate in internal rotation within the Emergency Department including night duty.
Management
- Manage and supervise allocated areas within the Emergency Department or take charge of the department in the absence of a senior nurse.
- Ensure communication of information between team members, patients and families; provide support and advice.
- Implement Trust, local and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines; contribute to their development as required.
- Initiate and develop new ideas and changes to improve patient care and staff engagement; ensure cost-effective use of resources within the department.
- Work within the Health and Safety at Work Act and Trust policies for reporting incidents, maintaining risk awareness in the workplace.
- Work as part of the team, liaising with senior colleagues and responding to feedback from preceptors and colleagues.
- Assist and participate in line management responsibilities under supervision of a senior sister.
Education
- Maintain a suitable learning environment for all staff grades.
- Assist in planning and implementing induction programmes for new staff.
- Contribute to the learning needs of team members, student nurses and other students allocated to the Emergency Department.
- Demonstrate ongoing education, research, clinical and leadership development; recognise diverse patient needs including children, older people and different ethnic groups.
Professional
- Observe the NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times and maintain up-to-date registration on the NMC register.
- Work to protect colleagues, patients and visitors from hazards and report any hazards discovered.
- Ensure mandatory and statutory training compliance for oneself and allocated junior staff.

Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Registered Nurse/Midwife or ODP
- Educated to Degree level or equivalent
- A&E/ALS/ATNC or other relevant course
Desirable
- Management or leadership qualifications or demonstrable experience
Knowledge/Experience
- Experience as a staff nurse in ED or acute settings
- Knowledge of adult and child safeguarding principles
- Knowledge of evidence-based practice in Emergency care
- Knowledge of ED quality indicators and CQUINs
Skills
- Strong communication skills for complex matters and situations
- Triage/Initial assessment skills
