Job description

Newsweek is the global media organization that has earned audience time and trust for more than 90 years. Newsweek reaches 100 million people each month with thought-provoking news, opinion, images, graphics, and video delivered across a dozen print and digital platforms. Headquartered in New York City, Newsweek also publishes international editions in EMEA and Asia.

Newsweek is looking for an experienced editor who can play a leading role in the worldwide digital publishing team.

Reporting to the VP, Digital Publishing, the Deputy Publishing Editor will help to lead the global team of Digital Content Editors. The successful candidate will be expected to take responsibility for the creation, publishing and curation of content during parts of the day.

They will ensure Newsweek’s high editorial standards are maintained across stories that range from hard breaking news and exclusive investigations to lifestyle coverage and the latest internet trends. They will have strong leadership skills and an eye for detail.

They will have a comprehensive understanding of media law and ensure articles are accurate and fair. They will meet strict deadlines.

They will ensure new tools and technology are used to improve Newsweek’s coverage across the newsroom. They will also work to help expand Newsweek’s coverage, including into growth areas such as video journalism. Strong knowledge of U.S. current affairs and politics is essential.

This is a full-time role, 5 days a week, Monday to Friday, 9 hours per day (with an hour for lunch) between the hours of 8am to 7pm depending on the needs of the company. It may include occasional weekend working.

Place of work: Our office is based in London but you will have the ability to work from home anywhere in the U.K.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Helping lead the Digital Publishing team to ensure consistent, fast and high-quality output in accordance with editorial strategy
  • Helping ensure that all published copy respects Newsweek standards, paying close attention to any legal or ethical issues and protecting the credibility and reputation of Newsweek
  • Helping ensure that content is elevated as merited to achieve the greatest impact with our audience
  • Managing team members directly and ensuring that they meet their goals and their personal potential
  • Support in developing and executing newsroom strategies and processes in line with Newsweek’s editorial and company objectives
  • Conduct and organise training for staff on tools and systems used in the newsroom
  • Performing any other reasonable duties as necessary to meet the needs of the business

Qualifications:

  • A track record of outstanding editing at a real-time news organisation
  • Experience of managing teams of editors and reporters
  • Experience of helping to lead newsroom innovation
  • A demonstrable record of collaboration with colleagues in other functions and other regions
  • Demonstrable ability to foster relationships with editorial staff to develop trust and offer constructive advice
  • Demonstrable knowledge of U.S. news and current affairs
  • Experience using common digital publishing tools such as content management systems
  • Experience using AI in a professional context is desirable
