Job summary

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join our Perinatal Governance team here at Gloucestershire Hospitals Trust, in the role of Deputy Perinatal Governance and Quality Midwife.

The post-holder will work with the Perinatal Governance and Quality Lead Midwife to develop, implement, and monitor patient safety and quality pathways, focusing on maintaining high standards of care and compliance with national and local standards. They will ensure all post-incident processes are completed, emerging themes are identified, shared, and recommendations are implemented in line with PSIRF. Under the leadership of the Perinatal Governance Lead Midwife, they will develop and sustain programmes to meet the outcomes set by regulatory bodies such as CQC, NHS England, NHS Resolution, and other relevant frameworks.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will support a proactive risk management culture, promoting informed questioning, positive challenge, data-informed analysis, and assurance. They will lead risk management and quality assurance activities, ensuring compliance with national and local programmes.

They will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with schemes like the maternity incentive scheme and NHS England's delivery plans, and support the Project Manager of NHSR Scheme and related projects. They will oversee activities supporting compliance and influence staff at all levels to improve patient outcomes and experience.

Job responsibilities
  • Promote a positive risk management culture and foster strong links with clinical and managerial staff.
  • Act as a reflective practitioner, ensuring governance activities align with best practices.
  • Support a culture of informed questioning, trend analysis, and assurance to improve patient outcomes.
  • Ensure effective governance systems, including incident reviews, investigations, and action plans, supporting investigations under PSIRF.
  • Review investigation performance and ensure timely reporting to senior management.
  • Collaborate with the Women and Children’s Division to maintain effective communication and standards.
  • Accurately communicate complex safety information and analyze submitted data.
  • Identify and escalate non-compliance issues promptly.
  • Support compliance with national standards and frameworks, including CQC and NHS resolutions.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and monitor relevant dashboards.
  • Deputise for the Lead Midwife and participate in on-call duties.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Active NMC registration
  • Degree in Midwifery recognized in the UK
  • Ongoing professional development and revalidation
  • Leadership qualification (e.g., NHS Leadership Academy)
  • Appropriate PSIRF training
  • Master’s degree or equivalent
Experience
  • Significant clinical/managerial experience (equivalent to Band 7) in governance/risk roles
  • Experience with PSIRF investigations and action planning
  • Mentoring and teaching experience
  • Experience with Datix Risk Management System
  • Understanding of NHS monitoring frameworks and reporting obligations
