Job summary

Compass Group PLC seeks a Deputy House Chef to back up the Head House Chef in a busy boarding house kitchen at Uppingham School. You will be hands‑on, delivering fresh, nutritious meals for pupils and staff while creating a welcoming dining experience.

You will help run day‑to‑day operations, mentor Kitchen Assistants and ensure high standards of safety and hygiene. DBS clearance and pre‑employment checks are required.

Qualifications

• Professional Cookery qualification such as NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent.
• Experience in a professional catering environment.
• Good knowledge of food safety, allergens and HACCP procedures.
• Ability to work confidently both independently and as part of a team.
• Strong organisational and time-management skills.
• Positive, professional and customer-focused approach.
• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil wellbeing.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Head House Chef with breakfast, supper and special meals.
• Prepare fresh, nutritious and varied food to a high standard.
• Cater safely for allergies and dietary requirements.
• Support daily kitchen operations, ordering and stock control.
• Mentor Kitchen Assistants and new team members.
• Maintain food safety, hygiene and HACCP compliance.
• Lead the kitchen when the Head House Chef is away.
• Build positive relationships with pupils and staff.
