Job overview

The Deputy Head of Medical Education, Knowledge and Library Services provides expert medical training knowledge, planning and leadership to the Integrated Education, Medical Education, Knowledge and Library Services Team.

Working with the Director of Medical Education, Assistant Director HR (Education), Training Programme Directors and College Tutors, the post holder acts as the Lead for Undergraduate, Foundation and Speciality Medical Education across both hospital sites to ensure that all national, regional and local policies and procedures affecting undergraduate, foundation and speciality medical education are complied with. This includes ensuring NHSE Education Funding Agreement 2024-2027 and Medical School SLAs, are delivered and the required local, regional and national educational standards are met.

To plan, develop, provide and monitor library and learning technology services for all learners and educators at ESHT, this includes all students/adult learners from all roles and levels within the Trust.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsibility for the delivery medical education training, and the delivery of Knowledge & Library Services as part of the Integrated Education Service
  • Supporting a broad range of training programmes and complex educational activities for Undergraduate/Postgraduate Resident Doctors including identification of training opportunities, training the trainers, Educational and Clinical Supervision Training in line with GMC and Educators Strategy to include the co-ordination of projects to assess and/or improve medical education.
  • Be responsible for the development of organisational processes that provide a foundation for the maximisation of performance, learning, innovation and improvement across Medical Education, Knowledge & Library services.
  • As part of the Integrated Education Leadership Team contribute to developing a range of educational governance processes to monitor for effectiveness of educational delivery and impact, this will include monitoring the Safer Learning Environment Charter and Educators Strategy.
  • Working with the Integrated Education Leadership Team to ensure that education action plans are linked to Divisional service delivery plans.
  • Provide reports to the education Leadership Team for the divisional boards, directorate business meetings, local faculty groups and performance reviews.
  • Define and develop a Medical Education and LKS strategy and annual plans to form part of the wider Education Strategy that will inform the Chief People Officer's ESHT

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • PG Certificate in Managing Clinical Education (or another relevant field)
  • MBA or master's degree with Business and or Education focus
  • Management qualification- Leadership Academy (EGA), PG qualification master's level in leadership and or management
  • Evidence of continued professional development in relevant subject

Desirable criteria

  • Professional Registration: e.g. Nursing and Medical Council, Health Care Professions Council
  • Educated to master's degree level in Library & Information Science or relevant, related subject.
  • Good honours degree / postgraduate degree in library / information science.

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Minimum of five years of senior management experience (at least 3-5 years' experience in a senior Medical Education role).
  • Proven operational leadership of team
  • Significant proven budget management experience

Desirable criteria

  • Proven experience in other fields of education including non-NHS organisations.
  • Previous experience of working in the NHS
