Job description

NHS England is seeking to appoint a Deputy Foundation School Director working across the Trent Foundation School.

Applicants must be currently working within the East Midlands area at consultant level or equivalent in the specialty school area. Experience within the specialty at consultant level is essential, as is considerable experience working with learners or doctors in training in an educational context.

Working with the Foundation School Directors and NHS England teams, you will contribute to improving the training experience by working on various projects and workstreams. This includes reviewing the quality of the newly created and existing posts, supporting and reviewing the SFP Leadership posts, and reviewing and refreshing the Foundation webpages.

You will support the Foundation School Directors with the overall quality, management, and supervision of the programme, ensuring all programmes meet the standards defined by NHSE, the GMC, and UKFPO.

You will deputise for the FSD in the operational running of the Foundation School. You will work closely with NHS England’s senior educators, including the Deputy Postgraduate Dean, Trent Foundation School Director, Foundation Training Programme Directors, and Directors of Medical Education, to ensure that each trainee can access a comprehensive range of experiences covering the Foundation Programme Curriculum.

You will be expected to maintain a clinical commitment. It is essential that you have a medical degree, membership/fellowship of the relevant Royal College/Faculty, and a current substantive contract as an NHS Consultant in a relevant specialty. The successful candidate will have experience of delivering or managing education and training at a senior level and experience of the foundation programme as a minimum.

The NHS England Board has set out the top-level purpose for the new organisation: to lead the NHS in England to deliver high-quality services for all. This purpose will inform the detailed design work and is achieved through:

  • Enabling local systems and providers to improve the health of their populations and reduce health inequalities.
  • Making the NHS a great place to work, where staff can make a difference and achieve their potential.
  • Working collaboratively to ensure our healthcare workforce has the right knowledge, skills, values, and behaviours to deliver accessible, compassionate care.
  • Optimising the use of digital technology, research, and innovation.
  • Delivering value for money.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in person.

If successful at interview, we will run an Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) in the Electronic Staff Record system (ESR). This transfer gathers information from a previous or current NHS employer to support onboarding, including statutory and mandatory competency status, Continuous Service Dates (CSD), and annual leave entitlement. You will have the opportunity to inform us if you do not consent during the process.
