Job description

Salary

Come and join us as a Deputy Engineering Manager at Catford garage working for a sustainable, diverse and community-focused employer who puts its people at the heart of its business, whilst delivering contracted bus services on behalf of Transport for London.

Keeping London’s people moving and the safety and support of our people is paramount. Our vision is to help people lead more sustainable lives, harnessing new and greener technology, whilst protecting our people and customers.

Would you love to be part of a professional engineering management team that maintains and repairs a modern and varied fleet of vehicles? If so, we are looking for a Deputy Engineering Manager to assist the Engineering Manager and Workshop Manager in the day-to-day management of the engineering function at our Catford garage in south east London. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring that our fleet of buses are maintained to the standard required by the Company, TfL and the DVSA. Your role as deputy engineering manager is not just about achieving maximum vehicle availability and continually improving standards; you will also have a direct influence on Health & Safety compliance/culture, fatigue management and employee wellbeing.

You should have a thorough understanding of mechanical engineering and vehicle maintenance procedures for large vehicles, preferably PCVs, as well as knowledge of electrical engineering, bodywork construction and basic stores procedures. The post holder should have the ability to gain a Transport CPC, if requested to do so. The ability to plan, prioritise, analyse and make decisions is also essential, as well as an up-to-date understanding of Health & Safety legislation.

Catford garage operates a varied range of double deck and single deck buses including new electric, mirrorless buses. You’ve probably seen some of our buses driving around south east London, transporting our fantastic customers around the area. Those customers rely on our services to get them to work, to the high street, to hospitals, to days away and nights out – and as part of our engineering management team you’ll be key to making sure our vehicles are in tip-top condition to do just that. It’s a really important role within our garage, so we’ll make sure you’re as looked after as our vehicles are!

So, if you have an engineering supervisory or management background working with large vehicles, then we can’t wait to receive your application!

Aside from the reward of helping to deliver an incredible experience to our customers, there’s plenty more we can offer:

  • Great benefits: including a competitive salary of £61,757.09 per annum with a further shift allowance of £3,542.67 per annum, company pension scheme, free financial education and affordable loans, and finally a range of money-saving opportunities including discounts on holidays and retail, cinema outings, dental insurance, vehicle breakdown cover and hotels and attractions. You will be required to work any 5 days out of 7 on a shift basis.
  • Free travel for you and a household member on TfL bus and rail services: (this is a non-contractual benefit) and outside London there is free travel for you and a companion on Stagecoach buses.
  • UK-wide opportunities, career development and secondment opportunities: to work elsewhere in our UK business. If you’re happy working as a Deputy Engineering Manager then that’s absolutely fine by us…but if you do want to progress we’ll support you every step of the way. You will be given exposure to work which will develop your skills and experience to allow you to progress your management career further.
  • An employee assistance programme: to support health and wellbeing through a confidential service available 24 hours a day, which provides specialist guidance and assistance on a range of personal and work-related issues, from dealing with stress and anxiety to managing financial, marital or legal issues.
  • A great working environment: with loads of opportunity to make new friends from a bunch of great colleagues and employee networks building inclusive environments for women, veterans, carers, multicultural and LGBTQ+ colleagues. We are proud to advocate and collaborate with our corporate charity, as well as a number of community engagement projects – in addition to proudly promoting an array of health, wellbeing and family initiatives.
