Deputy Director of Nursing, AHP, Health Scientists

Here at Velindre Cancer Services, we have an exciting opportunity for an exceptional, enthusiastic strategic nurse leader to join us as Deputy Director of Nursing, AHP & Health Scientists.

The role is a key part of the SST Directorate Triumvirate, working in partnership to lead and transform services within the directorate in line with commissioned activity.

The post holder will possess exceptional operational expertise to deliver and evaluate progress in achieving the Trust's vision of excellence in healthcare, especially as we progress into the new Velindre Cancer Centre (nVCC) in Cardiff. When completed, this world-class facility will provide specialist tertiary oncology services to patients across Southeast Wales.

Main duties of the job
  • Deliver a directorate and trust-wide integrated clinical strategy to continually improve the patient experience locally and nationally.
  • Translate and implement strategic policy into practice on behalf of the Director of Nursing, AHP & Health Science, ensuring benefits to patients and the community are realized.
  • Translate national guidance into local service delivery actions.
  • Lead strategic planning for redesign and modernization of nursing, AHP, and Healthcare Science services via IMTP and Strategy Group work, adapting to changing demands.
  • Lead projects to develop innovative ways of working and service improvements aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Ensure a sustainable workforce plan is in place to deliver high-quality care, considering multidisciplinary and skill mix redesign opportunities.
  • Support communication efforts and manage media inquiries related to the service.

Job responsibilities

You will provide strategic, visible, clinical, professional, and compassionate leadership for nursing, AHP, and healthcare science across the directorate. You will offer high-level specialist expertise in service transformation, patient pathway review, patient safety, quality, innovation, efficiency, and performance to improve care quality and patient outcomes, driving transformation through approved improvement models.

You will possess relevant professional qualifications plus additional specialist management knowledge acquired through training and experience.

Qualifications and Knowledge
  • Educated to Masters level or equivalent, with knowledge and/or experience supplemented by a highly specialist qualification to doctoral level or equivalent.
  • Registered Nurse Adult, AHP professional, or Healthcare Scientist with current NMC/HCPC or equivalent registration.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
  • Specialist clinical knowledge relevant to the responsibilities.
  • Understanding of diverse clinical areas and regional work arrangements.
  • Detailed knowledge of health service provision.
  • Awareness of current issues in professional nursing, AHP, or Healthcare Science practice.
  • Understanding of research and innovation influences on practice.

Experience
  • Senior post-registration experience managing large teams with broad control spans.
  • Specialist knowledge from diverse nursing/AHP or Healthcare Science disciplines within Trust services.

  • Experience with complaint management, budget management, people management, and performance management.
