Job description

Deputy Director for Environmental Markets & Regulation - 30904

We are seeking a Deputy Director to support the delivery of regulatory regimes aimed at creating a circular and Net-Zero economy by reducing waste and carbon emissions. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership to our specialist operational teams, working with government, industry, and regulators to ensure effective regulation of schemes such as Producer Responsibility Waste markets, Carbon Markets, Hazardous Waste, and others. The role involves managing high-impact services nationally and internationally, influencing senior stakeholders, and leading change in a complex environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership and management of operational teams.
  • Work with government and industry stakeholders to deliver regulatory standards and activities.
  • Manage relationships across government, industry, and partner regulators.
  • Champion health, safety, wellbeing, diversity, and inclusion within the team.
  • Contribute to wider organisational goals through leadership teams and cross-departmental collaboration.

Experience and Skills Required:

  • Proven operational leadership across large, dispersed teams.
  • Experience in delivering complex work programmes and implementing new ways of working.
  • Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to influence senior leaders and manage multiple priorities.
  • Experience managing change and navigating political and regulatory challenges.

This role requires autonomous operation, translating policy into impactful delivery, and representing the organisation effectively in complex environments. The position reports to Malcolm Lythgo, Director of Operations, and involves participation in incident response and business continuity activities.
