We are seeking an experienced leader to join the Environment Agency as a Deputy Director for Environmental Markets & Regulation. This role involves providing strategic leadership and management of operational teams responsible for regulating market-based schemes aimed at reducing waste and carbon emissions, supporting a Net-Zero economy.
The successful candidate will work with government, industry, and partner regulators to develop and implement regulatory standards, manage high-impact activities, and ensure effective collaboration across various stakeholders. Leadership qualities such as strategic thinking, excellent communication, and the ability to influence at senior levels are essential.
The role includes overseeing teams responsible for Producer Responsibility Waste markets, Climate markets, Hazardous Waste, Chemicals, and international waste shipments. The team comprises around 550 staff and is expected to grow. The Deputy Director will also contribute to wider organizational goals through participation in leadership groups and cross-departmental collaboration.
Key requirements include proven operational leadership across diverse teams, experience in delivering complex work programs, managing change, and navigating political and regulatory environments. A professional qualification in any discipline is preferred.
This position reports to the Director of Operations, National Regulation & Monitoring, and involves responding to incidents, leading on health, safety, and wellbeing initiatives, and promoting diversity and inclusion within the teams.
