The Role

As a Deputy Design and Safety Manager, you’ll be at the heart of one of the UK’s most critical defence programmes, supporting the Continuous At Sea Deterrent. This is a senior engineering leadership role within our Design Authority function, where you’ll help maintain the design integrity and safety of nuclear and critical infrastructure throughout its lifecycle.

Day-to-day, you’ll lead a team that controls and maintains the design integrity and the overall basis for safety of its nuclear and critical activities, throughout their lifecycle.

  • Overseeing and accepting design and safety artefacts to form the reference design
  • Approving activities across the lifecycle – from manufacture to decommissioning
  • Maintaining and periodically reviewing the reference design to ensure integrity
  • Assessing deviations and instructing corrective actions to maintain compliance
  • Collaborating with internal stakeholders (Design Leads, Safety Leads, MoD) and external partners (Regulators, Design Houses)

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Essential Experience
  • Leading engineering teams with strong technical and communication skills
  • Deep understanding of nuclear engineering and high-integrity outputs
  • Extensive knowledge of submarine infrastructure and operational authorisations
  • Proven interpersonal and leadership capabilities in complex environments
Qualifications
  • Degree qualified in an Engineering or Scientific discipline
  • Chartered status is highly desirable

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
