Midlothian has 6 secondary schools, 30 primary schools (including 19 nurseries), and 2 standalone nursery schools. Our special school, Saltersgate, supports children with various physical, social, emotional, behavioral, and learning difficulties. Our schools vary from small primary schools with around 20 pupils to large secondary schools with over 1200 pupils. The catchment areas are diverse, ranging from rural to urban, with several new schools built in recent years and more planned.

Interviews for this post will be held during the week beginning 25th August 2025.

Requirements

Pre-Employment Checks/Requirements for Teaching Positions

If successful, employment is conditional on satisfactory completion of checks, including medical screening, two references (one from your current employer), verification of qualifications, and eligibility to work in the UK. Registration with the General Teaching Council and a PVG check for work with children are mandatory.

Registration and PVG Scheme

Applicants for permanent posts must be registered with the GTCS. The position is considered Regulated Work with Children under the PVG scheme. Successful candidates must join the scheme or update their existing membership before starting employment. The costs (£59 for full membership, £18 for updates) will be deducted from salary over several pay periods. The PVG certificate viewing process has changed; certificates are available online for 14 days after viewing. Failure to grant access to the employer within this period may require reapplication, incurring additional costs.

Disclosure and Convictions

Applicants must disclose unspent convictions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Failure to disclose may lead to withdrawal of an offer. Having a criminal record does not automatically disqualify applicants; suitability depends on the nature of the offense and the position.
