Job description

BUSINESS FUNCTION: Engineering

GRADE: Stores Team Member

SALARY: £26,640 per annum - Shifts and weekend working attract additional allowance.

ROLE TYPE: On Site

HOURS: 37.5 per week – predominantly working Monday to Friday days but with an expectation to support on nights and weekends as required.

All aboard Northern! – Ready to keep our engineering teams fully stocked and our operations running like clockwork?

If you’ve got a knack for organisation, love working hands-on, and want to be part of something bigger, this could be just the ticket. As a Stores Team Member, you’ll be the engine behind the scenes—keeping our depots moving, our teams equipped, and our trains on track.

This isn’t just about storing stock and shifting boxes—it’s about contributing to the bigger picture of improving rail travel across the North. With thousands of trains running daily, we need reliable, detail-focused people who can help keep everything flowing behind the scenes.

Can you see yourself:

  1. Supporting the Team – Working closely with Engineering teams to issue essential materials and calibrated tools, keeping everyone ready and raring to go.
  2. Keeping Records Spot-On – Using SAP to track stock, log issues, and ensure every nut, bolt, and bearing is accounted for.
  3. Putting Safety First – Managing materials to Health & Safety standards and helping keep the depot a safe place to work.
  4. On the Move – Operating a forklift truck to receive, move, and store materials safely around our TrainCare Centre.
  5. Staying Proactive – Carrying out regular stock checks, identifying shortages and helping keep everything in its place.

Are you:

  1. Organised and Detail-Oriented? You’ll be responsible for managing a wide range of stock, including precision-calibrated equipment.
  2. A Great Communicator? You’ll work with multiple teams, so keeping everyone in the loop is key.
  3. Computer Confident? Familiarity with SAP is great—but don’t worry, we’ll provide training if you’re new to it.
  4. Qualified to Operate a Forklift Truck? This one’s essential. You’ll be loading, unloading, and moving materials safely.
  5. Self-Motivated? You’re someone who takes initiative, can work solo when needed, and takes pride in keeping things running behind the scenes.
  6. Friendly and Reliable? Someone who shows up, pitches in, and helps keep things on track.

Please note this role is safety critical and is subject to Rail Safety & Standards Board (RSSB) regulations. You MUST meet the following criteria for this position, or your application will be automatically rejected:

  1. Currently live within a 45-minute car journey from the station you work from.
  2. Be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
  3. Pass the safety critical medical assessment, including drugs and alcohol screening.
  4. Not have defective colour vision.

Why Northern?

We’re more than just a train operator. We’re the heartbeat of the North - connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we’re on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.

Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe - and this year, we’re celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.

At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B - we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview.

We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and medical assessment.

No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob… there’s a place for you here in the railway.
