Job description

The Oxford School of Global and Area Studies and The Oxford Department of International Development are seeking to appoint a Departmental Lecturer in the Political Economy of Latin America. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (0.5 FTE) and the Oxford Department of International Development (0.5FTE) and to develop experience in teaching and course administration. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to lecture and teach graduate students, and contribute to teaching, research, and academic administration of both departments. They will also engage in advanced study and academic research.

The Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA) is committed to understanding cultural, economic, political and social questions through the study of world regions in local, global and comparative contexts.

The Oxford Department of International Development (ODID) is a multidisciplinary centre of excellence for research and teaching on the developing world. ODID is renowned for its dynamic and diverse academic community and its commitment to addressing global challenges through high-impact, policy-relevant research.

Key Responsibilities:

• Contribute to teaching on graduate programmes, including supervision and assessment, for the two departments
• Undertaking advanced independent academic research
• Participating in the broader academic life of both ODID and OSGA by attending their regular seminars, and contributing to the organisation of the regular Main Seminar Series, and of relevant conferences in their field.
• Participate in the work of departmental committees like the teaching committees of the graduate degrees and the LAC Management Committee.

About You:

Applicants should have:

• A doctorate in social science such as economics, political economy, economic history, politics, or related fields;
• Proven ability and experience necessary to teach high-achieving and challenging graduate students, in a multi-disciplinary environment and to carry out student assessment, examination and course design;
• The willingness and ability to supervise MPhil dissertations in Development studies across a range of topics and regions, and dissertations and theses in the MSc and MPhil in Latin American Studies respectively, across a range of topics and countries in the region.
• Strong publication record and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field of Latin American Studies on issues relevant to development studies
