Job description

We have an exciting part-time opportunity for a qualified Dental Therapist to join our Dental Education Facilities in Truro.

The post holder will provide high quality primary care dental therapy and hygiene services within our dental education facilities. Patients may be referred via student teaching clinics, from our team of qualified dentists, or may be seen under Direct Access.

Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise (PDSE) is an award-winning Community Interest Company that provides primary care dental treatment and outreach services to local communities in Devon and Cornwall. As a social enterprise, we are a values-driven organisation with a focus on patient-centred care and addressing local oral health needs. We work closely with the University of Plymouth's Peninsula Dental School to support the clinical education of its dental healthcare students.

You must be registered with the GDC and have completed a BSc in Dental Therapy.

Main duties of the job

Role summary:

To provide high quality NHS dental therapy and hygiene services within the Dental Education Practice (DEP). Patients may be referred via student teaching clinics or from our team of qualified dentists. You may also be involved in triage sessions to identify suitable patients for students to treat. There may also be an opportunity to supervise the clinical training of BSc Dental Therapy and Hygiene students, supporting the development of their clinical skills, knowledge, and professional behaviour. You will work in a team environment that encourages dental education and development of the whole team.

Key accountabilities:

  • Provide clinically appropriate, high-quality NHS dental treatment to patients, following all relevant standards and guidelines.
  • Maintain PDSE standards of clinical governance, including infection control, patient confidentiality, clinical record keeping, etc.
  • Regularly carry out audits of clinical treatment, both your own work and student treatment provision.
  • Monitor the activities and actions of students to ensure the development of clinical skills and knowledge, offering guidance in all aspects of clinical dental practice.
  • Ensure health and safety procedures are observed at all times.
  • Support clinical dental education standards by working to evidence-based practices and clinical guidelines and care pathways.
  • Support the work of the entire dental team employed by PDSE.

Job responsibilities

Initially working in our Plymouth Dental Education Facilities in Derriford and Devonport, you will transfer to our new Dental Education Practice (DEP) in Plymouth City Centre when it opens in Autumn 2025. The DEP will offer urgent and stabilisation dental care, general and specialist dentistry, alongside placements for undergraduate and postgraduate students and trainees. We are seeking Dental Therapists to provide high-quality NHS dental therapy and hygiene services within the DEP. Patients may be referred via student clinics or our team of dentists. You may also participate in triage sessions to identify suitable patients for students to treat.
