Job overview

Full Time - Fixed Term 1 year - Dental Nurse needed, with opportunities for adhoc shifts on our Bank.

You will work in a busy department providing specialised Orthodontic, Paediatric, and Restorative dental care for children and adults.

We seek a qualified dental nurse who is enthusiastic, experienced, with excellent organisational and interpersonal skills. Previous experience in orthodontic dental nursing is desirable but not essential. You will also have the opportunity to work with our adult services colleagues in the Oral and Maxillofacial Department at Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Main duties of the job
  • Assist the orthodontic, paediatric, and restorative dental teams in delivering high-quality services.
  • Prepare and assist in clinics, provide pre- and post-operative instructions, and perform clinical tasks like taking dental impressions.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical - Outpatient

  • Review clinic lists and case notes before outpatient sessions to prepare appropriately.
  • Ensure clinical environments are prepared, equipment functioning, and necessary materials available.
  • Escort and welcome patients and guardians, assisting those with disabilities.
  • Assist clinicians chairside during various dental treatments, including orthodontic, surgical, and sedation procedures.
  • Identify and meet patients’ dental nursing needs, especially in challenging situations.
  • Provide care for paediatric patients with trauma, complex medical histories, or behavioural needs.
  • Assist in infection control, waste disposal, and maintaining clinical standards.

Clinical – Special Skills

  • Develop dental radiographs and maintain related records in compliance with regulations.
  • Take dental impressions and complete necessary training if not already qualified.
  • Explain procedures, give post-op instructions, and educate patients about oral health and appliance care.
  • Assist with complex restorative and surgical procedures, including implants and bone grafts.

Clinical – Theatre (Day Case General Anaesthesia List)

  • Review operating lists and prepare materials and instruments for theatre procedures.
  • Provide dental nursing assistance during theatre procedures.
  • Ensure instruments and materials are safely stored post-procedure.

Qualifications/Experience
  • National Examining Board Certificate for Dental Nurses or equivalent.
  • Experience as a Dental Nurse.
  • National Examining Board Certificate in Dental Radiography.
  • Certificate of Competency in Dental Impression Taking.
  • Diploma in Specialist Orthodontic Nursing (desirable).
  • Experience working with children.
