Job summary

Groundline Engineering is seeking a Degree Apprentice Design Engineer to learn and contribute to electrical transmission and distribution projects. You will work with Overhead Line and Underground Cables teams, gaining experience from early optioneering through detailed design and construction support.

You’ll study for a Civil Engineering degree with Nottingham Trent University, with paid time off for study and on-the-job training.

Qualifications

  • Use engineering design software to model proposed routes and structures.
  • Carry out structural analysis on assets to assess reuse or replacement.
  • Design foundations for electricity pylons and other assets.
  • Evaluate options to connect renewables to the network.
  • Produce engineering drawings using CAD software and create supporting reports.

As a Degree Apprentice Design Engineer, you will be involved in learning and developing your knowledge and skills within the electrical transmission and distribution sector.

This will involve working with our Overhead Line and Underground Cables teams to deliver a range of projects and engineering solutions, from early stage optioneering, to feasibility studies, right through to detailed design and providing design support to our clients during construction stage.

A typical day may see you involved in the following;

  • Using engineering design software to create models of proposed and existing line routes and structures.
  • Carrying out structural analysis on existing electricity network assets to assess suitability for reuse or replacement.
  • Designing foundations for new assets including electricity pylons.
  • Evaluating various options to connect wind, solar or battery storage facilities to the electricity network.
  • Producing engineering drawings using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.
  • Create reports detailing engineering solutions for submission to our customers.
  • Working with our project management team to develop plans and schedules to deliver our designs and projects to budget and time constraints

You'll be supported through your learning to attain a Civil Engineering Degree through Nottingham Trent University, with time off for study as the course requires and plenty of on the job training and support

To apply for this position you will need A levels (or equivalent) in Mathematics (essential), Physics and/or D &T (desirable) all at grade C or above. In addition you'll also need Maths and English GCSEs (or equivalent) at level 5
