Overview

Defence Network Migration Consultant (Contract)

Location: Wilts / Hybrid

Contract Type: Contract - inside IR35

Duration: 6-12 months (with potential for extension)

Security Clearance: SC required

Rate: Competitive day rate (dependent on experience and clearance level)

Purpose of the Role

To support the client Programme and Air Command in reviewing and migrating legacy Point-to-Point Services (PPS) and Restricted LAN Interconnects (RLIs). The consultant will assess operational criticality and define efficient migration or emulation strategies aligned with programme goals, technical feasibility, and cost constraints.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a detailed audit of PPS and RLI circuits in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Evaluate each service's operational importance and identify alternative capabilities within the programme.
  • Develop and document migration strategies, including:
  • IP conversion and routing to MOD Core Network (MCN).
  • IP conversion pending Future Resilient Network Service (FRNS) availability.
  • Emulation and migration to BWAK or MCN.
  • Define repeatable migration patterns and processes for future scalability.
  • Engage with senior stakeholders (e.g., Air Command) to ensure alignment and prioritisation.
  • Produce clear reporting on cost implications, risk mitigation, and migration timelines.
Essential Skills & Experience
  • In-depth knowledge of military communications infrastructure (PPS, RLI, MCN, BWAK, FRNS).
  • Proven experience in network migration, IP conversion, and service emulation.
  • Ability to assess mission criticality and interpret operational requirements.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, including with senior MOD and industry partners.
  • Analytical mindset with a focus on cost efficiency and risk management.
  • Active SC clearance (DV preferred or willingness to undergo DV process).
Desirable Skills
  • Familiarity with the Marshall Programme and its strategic objectives.
  • Understanding of DFTS and related contractual/programmatic frameworks.
  • Experience working within Air Command operational environments.
