Role purpose and overview

The Defence Editor is responsible for finding and writing stories within the field of defence. They lead the Daily Telegraph's coverage of events such as speeches by the defence secretary and military chiefs, defence spending reviews, and are expected to visit troops in the field and travel with the defence secretary. Building and maintaining contacts within defence, including with the MoD and armed forces, is essential. They will produce stories for the newspaper and the website, understanding how to present stories online effectively. This is a fixed-term contract covering parental leave.

Key responsibilities
  • Bring in exclusive, agenda-setting news stories that lead website and front-page news
  • Plan and produce stories from key events like military conferences and speeches
  • Write accurate, clear, and concise news stories in house style
  • Meet tight deadlines and organize schedules accordingly
  • Identify the best angle for potential stories under pressure and communicate clearly with editors
  • Ensure stories are accurate and legally compliant
  • Understand what attracts online readers and contribute to increasing online subscribers
Key skills
  • Experience in a national media newsroom or equivalent; proven track record as a specialist reporter or ability to find exclusive stories and develop contacts
  • Ability to write clear, accurate copy
  • Proven skills in developing sources and contacts
  • Ability to process large amounts of detailed information quickly and accurately
  • Highly organized, able to work on multiple projects and prioritize effectively
  • Strong verbal communication skills to explain stories clearly to editors
  • Knowledge of online story presentation is desirable
  • Experience with data-driven journalism is desirable
