Job description

The post holder will be required to undertake supervisory duties within the decontamination science discipline and oversee the workforce of Decontamination Technicians in HSDU and EDU, providing a specialised decontamination of medical devices service contributing to the clinical care of the patient.

To carry out the receipt, disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, packing and where required sterilisation of reusable medical devices. Record all tasks in the Trust tracking and tracing system. Work in accordance with the Department’s Standard Operating Procedures and Quality Management Systems.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing supervision and overseeing training of new staff and Apprentice Decontamination Technicians within the team.
  • Planning own workload with limited supervision.
  • Undertaking a range of duties within both Decontamination units at the Hospital, the Hospital Sterilisation and Decontamination Unit (HSDU) and Endoscope Decontamination unit (EDU).
  • Reprocessing reusable medical devices, disassembling, cleaning, disinfecting, checking, assembling, sterilizing, dispatching and tracking in a controlled environment.
  • Providing advice and training to Decontamination Technicians, new staff and Apprentice Decontamination Technicians effectively.
  • Providing a collection and delivery service to the Decontamination Technician Departments' customers.
  • Informing the Decontamination Technician Management team of any raw material shortages and ensuring stock is rotated.
  • Meeting the demands of the Department’s workload whilst consistently achieving high quality standards.
  • Undertaking investigation into non-conformances reports as instructed.
  • Operating decontamination equipment and carrying out routine tests in accordance with the Planned Preventative Maintenance Schedules, Quality Standards and Guidance.
  • Communicating with enquiries from users, and other members of healthcare staff in a polite and helpful manner, seeking scientific advice where required.
