Job summary

Oculus Legal Group is seeking a Debt Recovery Paralegal to join its Local Authority Recoveries team in Liverpool or Wigan. The role offers exposure to a busy practice advising local authority clients across England and Wales on debt recovery and related litigation.

You will manage your own caseload of pre-litigated and litigated matters, support solicitors on local authority work, and draft court documents and witness statements.

Qualifications

• Experience working in litigation, debt recovery, or commercial disputes as a Paralegal or Legal Assistant.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage a busy caseload.
• Candidates returning to litigation or retraining into recoveries are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

• Manage your own caseload of pre-litigated and litigated debt recovery matters under supervision.
• Support solicitors on local authority recovery work including council tax, business rates, and related enforcement matters.
• Draft correspondence, court documents, witness statements, and applications.
• Review case papers and advise on next steps and recovery strategy.
• Liaise directly with clients, debtors, enforcement agents, and third parties.
• Prepare matters for issue and progress claims through the court process.
• Monitor deadlines and ensure matters progress efficiently and compliantly.
• Update case management systems and maintain accurate file records.
• Assist with defended matters and more complex litigation where required.
• Support the wider team on ad hoc litigation and recovery projects.

A specialist litigation law firm is looking to appoint a Debt Recovery Paralegal to join its growing Local Authority Recoveries team in Liverpool or Wigan. This is an opportunity to join a well-established niche practice with a strong reputation in debt recovery and commercial litigation, acting for a large portfolio of local authority clients across England and Wales.

This role would suit a paralegal with experience in litigation, debt recovery, or commercial disputes, or someone with transferable contentious experience looking to retrain into a specialist recoveries environment. You will join a busy, supportive team handling a varied caseload and working closely with experienced solicitors on high-volume and often complex recovery matters.

The Role

• Managing your own caseload of pre-litigated and litigated debt recovery matters under supervision
• Supporting solicitors on local authority recovery work including council tax, business rates, and related enforcement matters
• Drafting correspondence, court documents, witness statements, and applications
• Reviewing case papers and advising on next steps and recovery strategy
