Overview

The Director of Nursing will work as a full-time nurse, providing overall supervision to all nurses and programs related to medical care in conjunction with OPWDD and The Salvation Army DDS programs. The role oversees a maximum of 96 persons supported and supervises an average of five nurses, including three full-time and two part-time staff. Responsibilities include ensuring quality assurance through routine audits of medical records, maintaining compliance, and working with department heads, staff, residents, and families to set goals and develop plans of correction to improve medical services. The Director will also review resident progress, analyze and evaluate business procedures, and demonstrate proficiency in assessing patient needs, managing complex conditions, and coordinating multidisciplinary care. Strong analytical, critical thinking, time management, and organizational skills are essential to manage multiple cases and ensure high standards of care.

Responsibilities
  • Communicate effectively, both written and verbal, with keen attention to detail, and speak, read, and write English proficiently.
  • Maintain access to reliable transportation.

  • Contribute to strategic planning and review, and implement standards for production, quality, and customer service.
  • Establish rapport with patients to identify service requirements.
  • Schedule, assign, and follow up on nursing and staff work to meet patient care needs.
  • Create a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support.
  • Promote patient independence through education and counseling on disease management, medications, and self-care.
  • Provide information to patients and healthcare teams, and resolve needs using multidisciplinary strategies.
  • Maintain documentation per OPWDD guidelines.
  • Collaborate with management to achieve clinical outcomes.
  • Travel to facility locations to provide management support and conduct audits.
  • Educate staff regularly on quality assurance and regulatory issues.
  • Oversee process development related to nursing at DDS sites.
  • Assist with compliance surveys and identify regulatory risks, implementing corrective actions.
  • Monitor staff, processes, and policies to ensure high-quality patient care.
  • Review facility systems and suggest improvements.
  • Train staff on quality assurance and compliance issues.
  • Identify risks and develop systems to minimize adverse events.
  • Work with the Quality Assurance and Operations teams on projects to improve nursing services.
  • Collaborate with medical, nursing, and administrative leadership across DDS departments.
  • Utilize MS Office tools proficiently and communicate effectively across diverse populations.
  • Review all medical records for compliance, provide training and corrective actions, and participate in staff hiring and supervision.
  • Conduct program visits, provide assessments, and support discharge planning.
  • Participate in facility committees and discharge planning processes.
  • Lead the nursing department, develop policies, and ensure all services meet the needs of individuals supported.
  • Manage up to 96 persons supported, supervising a team of nurses across multiple residences and programs.
Qualifications
  • Experience in OPWDD-certified homes, community residences, and nursing homes.
  • First Aid and CPR certifications preferred.
  • Respect and consideration for residents.
  • Current NYS Registered Nurse license.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Availability for on-call duties via phone and email 24/7.
  • Valid driver’s license with ability to drive large vehicles including wheelchairs or 15-seated vans.
