Job Summary

North Tyneside Council are recruiting staff nurses/staff midwives to work within the Childrens Public Health Service (CPHS) in preparation to commencing Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor) training from September 2025. The interview and selection process is in conjunction with Northumbria University. The service has close working relationships with the early help service, multiagency safeguarding hub (MASH), education, housing, primary care, midwifery services and sport and leisure, which ensures good outcomes for families and provides positive working relationships for staff.

The Signs of Safety model is embedded throughout the service and robust safeguarding supervision is provided to colleagues by Safeguarding Nurse Advisors. North Tyneside Childrens Social Care has been graded Outstanding by Ofsted in 2025. Colleagues are provided with support and supervision from a Nurse Manager throughout their probationary period and beyond and have access to an identified preceptor.

Main duties of the job

Are you a qualified staff nurse/staff midwife with knowledge of current issues relating to public health priorities and an understanding of the national drivers with regards to providing evidence-based interventions within the childrens public health service?

The post holder will support the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme within the context of integrated prevention and early help locality teams. They will ensure that the universal offer is delivered to all children aged 0-19. Extra support and targeted interventions will be offered to those families where additional need is identified.

ChatHealth and ParentLine are additional services provided to residents, delivered by the Childrens Public health Service in North Tyneside.

Job Description

The purpose of the job is to improve the health and wellbeing of children, young people and families, and addressing inequalities through the delivery of the healthy child programme and working as part of a skill mixed team.

The staff nurse/staff midwife is a member of the 0-19 Childrens Public Health Service within an integrated locality team, working to the NMC code and within the policies and procedures for the legal and statutory requirements relating to clinical practice.

The post holder will take a role in providing support for an effective transition to parenthood and adulthood, improving the health and well-being of children, young people and their families.

The aim of the service is to promote and protect the health and well-being of children, young people and their families from the ante-natal period through to age 19 and address inequalities.

Fundamental to the aim of the service is universal access to the healthy child programme and early identification of additional and/or complex needs.

To provide a continuously improving service in line with the 0 - 19 Clinical Governance Framework and Public Health Service Plan.

Service delivery will be underpinned by the following principles:

  • Intervene early with evidence based, family focussed services.
  • Provide visible and proactive universal services.
  • Early Help Assessments (EHA) will be used to promote early intervention and co-ordinate teams working around families.

The staff nurse/staff midwife will establish and maintain effective communication with various individuals, groups and agencies, and work closely with the health visitor/school nurse to ensure delivery of the healthy child programme.

The post holder will be accountable for their own work and delegation of work within the parameters of the service specification.

To adhere to standards of the organisation for record keeping using SystmOne and to prepare professional reports as required.

Achievement of service delivery targets and personal targets set in annual IPR.

To support on the delivery of healthy child programme in line with nationally recognised best practice and local standards.

An active contribution is made towards promoting the highest standards of health & safety.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential:

  • Registered Nurse / Adult / Child / Mental Health or Registered Midwife
  • Current NMC registration.
  • Relevant and recent nursing experience.

Experience Essential:

  • Child protection / Safeguarding Children / experience of national and local policies.
  • Health promotion
  • Multi Agency working
  • IT and keyboard skills for the use of report writing information retrieval and access of evidence-based practice.
  • Use of expert data systems for client care, audit, service planning and health profiling, e.g. SystmOne.

Knowledge Essential:

  • Adhere to Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct and to national and local policies.
  • Knowledge of current issues relating to public health priorities and addressing inequalities in outcomes.
  • Understanding of adult/child safeguarding procedures.
