As part of the Campus Support & Security team, you will need to be prepared for a wide variety of situations that can change in an instant. Your responsibilities could include patrolling the busy areas of responsibility, including a large city centre based campus, halls of residences and a remote veterinary teaching campus or talking with a student who is looking for advice or assistance whilst adjusting to the demands of university life and being away from the comforts of home.
This role involves delivering a comprehensive service for everyone who uses our campus. You will have daily contact with the university community, respond to emergencies, investigate incidents, gather intelligence, and provide reassurance. Above all, your presence will help maintain a safe, friendly, and secure environment by being proactive, approachable, visible, and attentive.
Working in our control room goes far beyond answering calls. Its about gathering and sharing accurate information so the right decisions can be made, helping to protect people and keep the university community safe.
Campus Support & Security Officers are usually the first point of contact when students, staff, or visitors need urgent help or assistance. Covering the entire campus and our satellite sites, Campus Support & Security Officers handle both emergency and non-emergency calls, monitor alerts through the SafeZone app, oversee CCTV and live car park systems, and continually assess levels of risk and vulnerability. By accurately assessing each incident, they ensure that the most appropriate response is delivered quickly and effectively.
Officers make use of a range of systems to log incidents promptly and precisely, so effective computer and typing skills are essential. Equally important is the ability to remain calm, clear-headed, and professional in a fast-paced and often unpredictable environment.
The Control Room receives a high volume of calls on a daily basis. Each one is treated individually and with sensitivity, recognising that callers may be distressed or vulnerable. In a single shift, an Officer may support a victim of crime on one call and then assist a student struggling with the pressures of university life on the next.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated individual who embraces variety and is willing to meet challenges head-on, including difficult or sensitive situations. High level of communication skills are essential—you'll need to build rapport with people from diverse backgrounds, demonstrate diplomacy, and stay calm when under pressure. You must also be able to act decisively and effectively.
A key part of the role is serving as a first responder in safety and welfare incidents, so we value individuals who can remain composed while responding with care, compassion, and professionalism.
Previous experience in a similar role is not essential. What matters most is the right attitude, a commitment to delivering excellent service, and the ability to work as part of a team. We will provide training to help you develop the specific skills required.
