Background

The Defence & National Security (D&NS) theme at the Turing aims to expand its Applied Research Group (ARG). ARG applies cutting-edge research to real-world problems, collaborating closely with partners' technical and subject-matter experts.

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in a relevant discipline or possess proven equivalent professional experience, such as in government, defence, or industry. This role suits individuals who thrive in autonomous working environments and have a passion for technical innovation.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and adapt state-of-the-art data science and machine learning techniques for ARG partners' challenges.
• Work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, utilizing industry-standard tools for testing, version control, and collaboration to produce shareable software artifacts.
• Conduct experiments and develop capabilities, including building and deploying machine learning models, applying data science techniques, and developing microservices, data processing systems, or visualizations.
• Manage applied research projects technically, liaising regularly with partners, which may involve travel to partner sites.

Person Specification

• PhD or equivalent in computer science, data science, mathematics, statistics, electrical and electronic engineering, or related fields.
• Experience in cybersecurity or machine learning.
• Experience leading or participating in applied research projects.
• Proficiency in languages such as Python, C, C++, C#, SQL, JavaScript, HTML, Java, Kotlin, Rust, or Go.
• Ability to manage conflicts and resolve stakeholder tensions.
• Experience in scientific software development, familiarity with Pandas, NumPy, PyTorch/TensorFlow, and working with HPCs.
• Current DV clearance or eligibility to obtain it; willingness to undergo DV screening.
