Overview

We are offering a rewarding one-year placement as an Undergraduate Data Scientist at AWE. This role supports the Nuclear Threat Reduction (NTR) programme, which assists Government work on national security issues related to radiological and nuclear materials. The work spans fundamental and applied research, including the development of technology demonstrators, data analysis, and advisory support on detection, forensics, and treaty monitoring. The project aims to investigate data science techniques to contribute to the analysis and understanding of data gathered in support of the NTR mission. Joining the team as an undergraduate student provides experience working within a multidisciplinary team of scientists applying data science across a range of datasets.

Application process (timeline) Online Tests (numerical, verbal, logical, and cognitive assessments) if shortlisted, with practice materials available. Virtual Assessment Centre (AC) invitations for successful candidates, running Nov–Dec 2025, with pre-assessment webinars.

Responsibilities and requirements
  • We are interested in applications from candidates working toward a degree in Computer Science, Forensics, Physics, Chemistry, or Maths.
  • Evidence of a minimum 2:2 in your degree by August 2026 is required before starting with the business.
  • You must be able to join AWE in August 2026.
  • You must be a British National, able to start in August 2026, and eligible for security clearance.
