Job description

Ideas | People | Trust

We’re BDO. An accountancy and business advisory firm, providing the advice and solutions entrepreneurial organisations need to navigate today’s changing world.

We work with the companies that are Britain’s economic engine – ambitious, entrepreneurially-spirited and high growth businesses that fuel the economy - and directly advise the owners and management teams that lead them.

We’ll help you succeed

Leading organisations trust us because of the quality of our advice. That quality grows from a thorough understanding of their business, and that understanding comes from working closely with them and building long-lasting relationships.

You’ll be someone who is both comfortable working pro-actively and managing your own tasks, as well as confident collaborating with others and communicating regularly with senior managers, directors, and BDO’s partners to help businesses effectively. You’ll be encouraged to identify and draw attention to opportunities for enhancing our delivery and providing additional services to organisations we work with.

The Data Science Manager is responsible for leading and developing a team of data scientists to deliver advanced analytics, machine learning and AI solutions that create measurable business value. Combining strong technical expertise with leadership skills, the role focuses on building a high-performing team, promoting best practice and ensuring data science initiatives align with wider organisational objectives. The post holder will also work closely with senior stakeholders to identify opportunities where data-driven solutions can improve performance and support strategic decision‑making.

A key part of the role is overseeing the end-to-end delivery of complex data science projects, from discovery and design through to deployment and ongoing monitoring. This includes managing priorities and resources, establishing delivery standards and ensuring analytical solutions are delivered on time, within budget and to a high quality. The role is accountable for driving the adoption of best practice across modelling, experimentation, validation and implementation, ensuring insights translate into practical and measurable business outcomes.

The Data Science Manager will provide technical leadership across advanced analytics, machine learning and AI, guiding the development of predictive, forecasting and optimisation models. They will champion innovation by exploring new technologies and analytical techniques, including the responsible use of Generative AI, and support the deployment of scalable, robust and explainable models into production environments.

The role also has significant stakeholder management responsibilities, acting as a trusted advisor to business leaders and translating complex analytical findings into clear recommendations for both technical and non-technical audiences. Alongside this, the post holder will ensure compliance with data governance, risk and ethical standards, work collaboratively to improve data quality and contribute to the organisation's wider data and analytics strategy through continuous improvement and innovation.

You’ll be someone with:
  • Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or a related quantitative discipline, or equivalent practical experience
  • Significant experience in data science, advanced analytics and machine learning, with a track record of delivering business value
  • Experience leading technical teams, developing talent and managing multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment
  • Strong knowledge of statistical analysis, predictive modelling, forecasting, optimisation and experimentation techniques
  • Experience working with large, complex datasets and translating business requirements into analytical solutions
  • Advanced Python and/or R skills, with strong SQL knowledge and experience using machine learning frameworks
  • Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS or GCP), data visualisation tools and MLOps/model deployment practices
  • Understanding of data governance, responsible AI and Generative AI/LLM technologies; relevant professional qualification desirable
