Description

Are you passionate about transforming complex data into meaningful insights that help improve dogs’ lives?

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague skilled in Data Science to support Dogs Trust's Data Science & Analytics team by developing reproducible analytical workflows, maintaining automated data processes, and delivering high-quality analysis that underpins evidence-based decision making across the organisation. The focus of this role is our projects exploring national-level dog population characteristics and dynamics. These projects involve working closely with a variety of external collaborators to collate data from a multitude of sources, including online classified advert platforms, local authorities, and commercial organisations. Working to transform this data into meaningful insights, you'll help ensure our policy, practice, and operational activities are built on a trusted foundation.

This role involves occasional travel to Dogs Trust locations and external events across the UK.

Interviews are provisionally scheduled for 28th and 29th September online via teams.

What does this role do?

As a Data Officer you'll:

  • collaborate with internal teams and external partners to maintain and build lasting collaborations,
  • develop and maintain reproducible analytical pipelines, automated processes, and ETL workflows to improve efficiency, data quality, and accessibility of information,
  • perform data management, analysis, and visualisation using tools such as R, Python, SQL,
  • support advanced analytical approaches, including predictive modelling, segmentation, machine learning, and natural language processing,
  • produce engaging visualisations, dashboards, reports, and research outputs that clearly communicate findings to a variety of audiences,
  • help maintain robust documentation, coding standards, and version control practices to ensure all analytical work is transparent, traceable, and reproducible.
Could this be you?

This role is well suited to someone with a relevant MSc, or PhD (such as data science, computer science, statistics), or equivalent professional experience. You'll have strong technical expertise in SQL and either R or Python, along with experience working with complex datasets from multiple sources.

You’ll be confident turning data into clear, accessible insights through analysis, reporting, and visualisation, and will have excellent communication skills that enable you to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders and build lasting collaborations with external organisations. Experience with automation, reproducible analytical practices, and collaborating on research projects would be highly beneficial. Most importantly, you'll be passionate about using data to support evidence-based decisions and further the aims of Dogs Trust.

What does this team do?

The Research Team aims to ensure that Dogs Trust’s policy, practice and operational activity is based in the best evidence. The Data Science and Analytics team are a technical unit of data professionals within the Research team who support Dogs Trust strategic aims by providing data insight and research opportunity, via statistics and computational methods. The team analyse, visualise, and communicate robust statistics: maximising the efficacy of internal teams, whilst ensuring external stakeholders have the confidence to rely on our outputs.
