Job summary

SMBC Group is building a data hub and a global data platform across EMEA. We seek a Vice President Data Modeller who will lead enterprise data modelling, collaborate with front office and operations, and drive governance, data quality and analytics alignment.

You will work with IT, Data Office, and regional teams to implement conceptually strong data models that support strategic programs and ECB/BCBS234 compliance.

Qualifications

• Experience building enterprise data modelling functions across banks or financial institutions.
• Ability to conceptualise and develop enterprise data models.
• Experience using modelling tools such as Erwin, ER Studio, or IDA.
• Ability to map data models to business information models and governance frameworks.

Responsibilities

Role Summary

We are seeking a skilled Data Modeller (Vice President) with strong business analysis capabilities to join our Data Modelling team. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with business stakeholders in operations and front office to analyze business services, document processes, and develop logical and conceptual data models. This role requires a deep understanding of data domains, business acumen in the banking and financial services industry, and the ability to assess data similarities across applications.

The organization is currently building a data hub that will serve as the single source for distributing data and follow the medallion architecture. The Silver layer of data hub would be represented through a series of Data domains and sub domains which represent data in the Third normal form. The modeler would develop conceptual and logical data models for these data domains and sub domain, create provisions to map them to the Business Information model in alignment to the Data Modelling Policy.

Business Area

SMBC is undertaking several strategic transformation programmes aimed at better organizing and modernizing its data estate. One such initiative is the creation of a Data Platform that provides comprehensive data services to its consumers. This platform leverages various technologies—primarily Databricks—to simplify and enhance data access, eliminating the need for users to understand the complexities of data retrieval.The goal is to establish global principles and empower regions such as AD, EMEA, APAC, and Tokyo to adopt a federated approach to delivering these capabilities. The vision and concept for EMEA have been accepted, and a plan is underway to establish the foundational capabilities of this platform. These include data domain definition, logical data models, an integration layer, a distribution mechanism, and an analytics framework.

Current efforts focus on data architecture frameworks and policies, data modelling, and architecture governance to support the platform’s deliverables, to begin with and extending thereafter to other initiatives. This requires close alignment with IT architecture, IT delivery, business architecture, business stakeholders, and other members of the Data Office across EMEA, AD, and globally.

This role would drive Enterprise Data modelling across EMEA while working closely with the IT and Data Office teams globally i.e. EMEA, AD, APAC, Tokyo.

Position Description

Accountabilities and Responsibilities :

• Mobilise and roll out Data Modelling Function: Create the required organisation structure and operating model to support Enterprise Data modelling for EMEA
• Drive Adoption regionally and globally: Drive the use of enterprise Data Models locally and regionally across Business, IT and Data teams. Work with Data owners actively to achieve this.
• Drive Distribution Patterns: Drive the use of Enterprise Data models for silver, gold layers in the Data platform, conceptualise data products
• Business engagement and Analysis: Work with Data office SMEs and Business stakeholders to assess business processes and structures. Responsible to identify the similarities of data across different applications for similar data concepts and document the findings.
• Data Understanding and Communication: Use the data model as a common language between business stakeholders, data professionals, and IT teams. Provide a visual representation of how data elements relate to each other, allowing stakeholders to understand and discuss data requirements, definitions, and rules. With a clear and shared understanding of the data model, teams can collaborate effectively, aligning business needs with data and in turn its implementation.
• Data Governance and Compliance: Ensure that the model is controlled, and decisions are captured through the forum. Work with the other areas of the bank to standardise where possible. Represent the EMEA Division ensuring that our idea, needs and requirements are incorporated. To champion the use of the data model in strategic initiatives like ECB, BCBS239, CLM, Enterprise Data platform etc.

Skills and Experience

• Experience in:
  • Building Enterprise data modelling functions across Banks and financial service organisations
  • Conceptualisation and Development of Enterprise Data Models
  • Use Modelling Tools (like Erwin, ER studio, IDA etc)
  • Creation and driving agreements on operating model for data models i.e. development, roll out and use across IT, Business and Data teams
  • Enable the function to do Model development and release management
  • Develop Data Modelling skills within the team and deliver Enterprise data models to strategic programs and data domains
• Practically use these models to support
  • Data Governance, Data Quality, Data Analytics
  • IT development and delivery
  • Business requirements and data products
• Good knowledge of Industry standards and models for Banking and Financial Services like (BIAN , BFMDW, FSLDM, BIRD etc)
• Experience in integrating Enterprise Data Models with Data governance tooling (Collibra etc)
• Physical data modelling concepts or experience
• Ability to use Microsoft office, JIRA or Service Now and other Project Management tools
• Supporting cross functional working with the Technology Department and regional teams to bring alignment where possible
• Alignment with Tokyo Head office, AD, APAC modelling teams on deliverables
