The job involves working within a clinical team caring for patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML). The post has two distinct responsibilities. The first is to maintain an established database consisting of clinical and laboratory data from patients with CML who are cared for in the Haematology Department at the Hammersmith Hospital. This part of the position will involve collecting and entering patient data from medical records. Information is currently stored in an Access database, and used for data analysis but the database will soon move to RedCap. The post holder will be responsible for collating the results and reporting these on a regular basis to ensure continuing progress. We estimate that this role will comprise approximately 50% of the post-holder’s time.

The second role is to act as the lead data manager for the UK national registry for patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia. In addition to entering data from our own patients into the registry database, the post-holder will liaise with HCP in other UK hospital trusts to support them to enter data from their own patients. The first task of this post holder will be to assist in the transfer of the data from an Access database to RedCap. This will involve interrogating the database and preparing the data for statistical analysis. We estimate that this role will comprise approximately 40% of the post-holder’s time.

Main duties of the job

  • To collect and record internal data for research projects and clinical trials relating to CML.
  • To provide data on a regular basis from a variety of sources (medical record files, laboratory systems) for input into the in-house computer database. This will involve liaison with staff members in the Hammersmith Hospital and NorthWest London Pathology.
  • To correctly sort and identify the required clinical information from the medical notes and miscellaneous correspondence on individual patients.
  • To enter the required information on the local electronic databases and cross-check its accuracy
  • To highlight any areas where local data is missing and seek to rectify gaps
  • To retrieve data from the local database (based on specific queries) upon request
  • To manipulate, analyse and present local data for inclusion in reports and publications
  • To enter the above data into the UK CML registry database
  • To assist other UK hospital Trusts in data entry to the UK CML registry database
  • To actively encourage annual reporting to the UK CML registry database
  • To highlight any areas where data is missing from the UK CML registry and seek to rectifygaps
