Job Description

Are you a skilled Data Engineer confident working at scale across complex data ecosystems? Keen to take ownership of pipelines, models, and tooling in a meaningful environment?

At Genomics England, we handle complex clinical and genomic data to help researchers, clinicians, and scientists improve patient outcomes.

We seek a proven Data Engineer experienced in moving and transforming large volumes of sensitive healthcare and genomic data, building scalable infrastructure, and enabling trustworthy data products. This role offers a chance to modernise and optimise genomic data processing and delivery with real-world impact.

Responsibilities:
  • Design, build, and optimise data pipelines and processing systems
  • Work with clinical and genomic data at scale, from acquisition to transformation, lineage, metadata, and de-identification
  • Utilise tools like Tableau, Semarchy, Prefect, Aspera, and Globus for orchestration, visualization, and secure data transfer
  • Support teams with data models and infrastructure
  • Build in AWS, following best practices for storage, compute, and orchestration
  • Ensure data quality, observability, testing, and automation standards
  • Collaborate with product, QA, architecture, and engineering teams
  • Contribute to machine learning and visualization capabilities
  • Enhance data engineering capabilities organization-wide
Qualifications:
  • Experience building data pipelines and large-scale processing systems (ETL/ELT)
  • Hands-on experience with AWS and cloud-first data engineering
  • Knowledge of tools like Tableau, Aspera, Semarchy, Prefect, Globus
  • Strong coding skills (Python preferred), experience with CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code
  • Skills in data visualization and statistical analysis
  • Understanding of data governance, modeling, and regulated environments
  • Awareness of security, performance, and compliance in sensitive data systems
Preferred:
  • Experience with genomic or bioinformatics data
  • Knowledge of ML pipelines and deploying ML models
  • Background in life sciences, healthcare, or public sector tech
  • Familiarity with healthcare data standards (OMOP, FHIR, SNOMED, ICD-10)
Additional Information
