Job summary

Ookla invites a Senior Data Engineer to join our Data Engineering team, shaping data tools, libraries, and processing systems for mobile and fixed internet performance analysis. You will build scalable data pipelines, collaborate with data scientists, and drive performance improvements across Redshift, Spark, and lakehouse environments.

Ideal candidates have 3+ years in Python, strong SQL, and experience with distributed data processing.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Strong understanding of programming concepts with experience in at least 1 OOP language (Python, Scala, Java).
  • Strong background and 3+ years of direct experience working with Python.
  • Experience with high volume distributed data processing in Spark.
  • Strong working knowledge of SQL, databases (MySQL / Redshift / Athena / Trino), data modeling, and modern data warehouse (lakehouse) management.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and analysis skills.
  • Excited to learn and work with new technologies in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong communication skills both in person and via virtual mediums.
  • Strong time management skills and a self driven work ethic.
  • Experience with AWS cloud services is a plus.
  • Experience with event driven architecture and streaming data pipelines is a plus.

Responsibilities

The Opportunity:

We’re looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join the Ookla Data Engineering team and help us process the world’s best collection of data on mobile and fixed internet performance. As a data engineer you will be focused on developing tools, libraries and operations to support data scientists and analysts as they discover new and exciting ways to apply our data. Applicants should have a strong, data-focused programming background and be passionate about accuracy and performance. You will work on big data using the latest technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

Compensation Range

Ookla provides a range for the base pay. Factors that may be used to determine your actual pay may include your specific job related knowledge, skills, experience, and geographic location. The salary compensation for this role is £50,000 - £56,000. Individual pay within the compensation range for this business unit specific role is determined based on a variety of factors including experience, scope of the role, capabilities to perform the role, education and training, as well as business and company performance.
