Overview of the role

We are seeking a motivated and professional Data Engineer to join our Digital Services team.

Please note that while this role is classed as remote, there will be an element of office-based work in Sheffield once a week/a few times a month.

Reporting to the Group Director - Digital, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality services aligned with NOCN's strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, build and maintain data pipelines and integrations that connect previously siloed systems into reliable, reusable data resources.
  • Model and structure data in ClickHouse (and related tooling) so it is trustworthy, well-documented and ready for analysis and product development.
  • Use AI tooling to accelerate the set-up of data resources, automate routine data work and support exploratory analysis - applying human judgement to the outputs.
  • Deliver analysis and data products at pace so ideas can be validated with real evidence within days rather than months.
  • Work in continuous discovery with developers, UX and business colleagues, holding the thread from data need through to delivered insight.
  • Ensure data quality, lineage, security and compliance (including GDPR) across everything you build.
  • Help establish data standards and practices, and mentor others as we build our in-house data capability.
  • Support a broad product landscape - internal AI and orchestration, learner tools, finance, customer support and more.
About You
  • Level 2 in Literacy and Numeracy
  • Degree in Computer Science, Data, Engineering, Maths or a related discipline OR equivalent practical experience - what you have built matters most.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development in data engineering, cloud data platforms, AI tooling or related disciplines.
  • Experience of operating within an Agile / Scrum, discovery-led environment.
  • Proven experience designing, building and running data pipelines and integrations (ETL/ELT) that shipped and are relied upon.
  • Strong SQL and data-modelling skills, and experience with modern data platforms or warehouses (ClickHouse or similar).
  • Exceptional use of AI tools to set up data resources and support analysis - or clear evidence of being a fast learner with a strong desire to work this way.
  • Python for data engineering, scripting and analysis.
  • Able to turn data into clear insight for non-technical audiences - comfortable with analysis and presenting findings simply (basic stats and visualisation).
  • Confident with data quality, lineage, security and compliance, including GDPR.
  • Able to work closely with colleagues across disciplines, from insight through to delivery.
  • We offer 38 days of annual leave this includes 8 bank holidays and 3 closure days between Christmas and New Year
  • We can offer hybrid working
  • We can offer flexible working for a better work-life balance
  • Buy/Sell Annual leave
  • Training and development opportunities
  • Free parking at both offices
  • Life assurance
  • Modern office spaces
  • Enhanced family leave
  • Optional tax-free childcare schemes
  • Dress down Fridays
