About Pearson Assessment Services: The Pearson Assessment Services (PAS) team provides assessment services to the UK and international assessment markets, supporting government education departments with project management, operational delivery, and technical solutions. We are part of Pearson School Qualifications, which supports curriculum, qualifications, and assessments for students in the UK and globally, delivering exams to over a million students in over 80 countries annually and operating as a centre of excellence in qualifications and assessment.

About the Job:

The position is for a Data Engineer with experience working on large data-focused projects. Responsibilities include data transformation, ingestion, validation from multiple sources, and improving methods for data analytics and reporting.

We are initiating a large new programme hosting data in AWS and platforms like MySQL. The role involves collaborating with SMEs, product owners, architects, and developers, requiring excellent communication and analytical skills. Attendance at senior stakeholder meetings to explain project progress and design decisions is also expected, so good communication and planning skills are essential, with the ability to simplify technical concepts for a wider audience.

About You:

You should have a background in complex data transformation projects or project initiation, and be eager to work on fast-moving, critical projects, contributing to design decisions. Proven project delivery and advanced data validation experience are advantageous.

Key Skills & Experience:

  • Proficiency with database systems such as Amazon Aurora MySQL, Microsoft SQL, Oracle, DynamoDB, etc.
  • Expertise in designing, developing, and maintaining complex SQL queries and stored procedures.
  • Performance tuning and optimization of data pipelines.
  • Implementing data monitoring solutions.
  • Developing scripts and automation tools for data management.
  • Knowledge of version control systems like Git.
  • Familiarity with AWS services: DMS, Lambda, S3, Step Functions, CloudWatch, Redshift, Glue, EventBridge.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and repositories (e.g., Bitbucket).
  • Automated testing design and implementation.
  • Experience with large-scale data environments and warehousing concepts.
  • Data ingestion and integration experience.
  • Strong organizational skills, proactive, curious about data and its value.
  • Experience with agile methodologies using JIRA, Confluence, and Trello.
  • Ability to collaborate with product management, data architects, and stakeholders.
