Job description

Data Engineer

Pay up to £38,373, plus 28.97% employer pension contributions, hybrid working, flexible hours, and great work life balance.

As a Data Engineer you will be working within a high-performing team of engineers, developing data-centric solutions to complex problems that positively impact millions of DWP users, helping them to find and use essential DWP services.

DWP. Digital with Purpose.

We are looking for a Data Engineer to join our community of tech experts in DWP Digital.

We're using fresh ideas and leading-edge tech to build and maintain digital solutions that will be used by nearly every person in the UK, every day and at key moments in their lives.

DWP is the UK's largest government department. We help people into work, and make payments worth over £195bn a year to support and empower millions of people.

The scale of what we do is extraordinary, and our purpose is unique. We'd love you to join us.

What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?

  • Experience of code development activities to deliver data transformation products.
  • Ability to write clean, efficient, reusable and well documented code for data processing tasks to a specification.
  • Intermediate or better experience of Python, SQL and PySpark.
  • Ability to develop automated and reuseable data ingest routines, workflows and mappings for structured and unstructured data using automation via code.
  • Experience of transforming data models into production ready code.

You and your role

As a Data Engineer, you'll turn business requirements into something real, whether that's clean, reusable code or well-structured data models that are ready for production. You'll make sure those requirements are clear, robust, and actually make sense before diving into the build.

You'll work closely with a range of people, from data owners and suppliers to operations teams and end users, shaping how we model and manage data. That means listening, asking the right questions, and making sure everyone's on the same page.

Day to day, you'll be hands-on with ETL processes, data loading strategies, reconciliation, archiving, integration, and error handling, all the things that keep our data flowing smoothly and reliably. You'll also be the person others turn to when something's not quite right, helping to troubleshoot data quality issues and find practical solutions.

You'll carry out data profiling and basic analysis to help spot problems early, support design work, and guide decisions on how best to bring different data sources together.

You'll also have space to explore, running discovery work and proof of concepts to test ideas and recommend the best way forward. You'll be trusted to make day-to-day decisions about your own work and support others where needed.

You'll help the team grow, staying curious about what's happening in the wider data world, and sharing what you learn to help others build their skills too, championing collaboration and sharing best practices.
