Aspirecom is actively seeking a hands-on Data Centre Engineer to join our London-based team on a full-time permanent basis. You will execute physical installations, cabling, and rack commissioning across major data centers and customer sites, while adhering to safety standards.

Position Summary

Aspirecom is actively seeking an experienced, hands-on Data Centre Engineer specializing in physical installations, structured cabling, and fiber optics to join our rapidly expanding network service provider client across London on a full-time permanent basis. In this critical field-engineering role, you will be responsible for executing physical installations, copper and fiber cabling, rack commissioning, and physical-layer fault finding across data centers, points of presence (PoPs), and customer sites. You will leverage your strong field engineering background to provide remote-hands support, support infrastructure migrations, and ensure uncompromising operational safety within live enterprise environments. This opportunity offers a competitive salary of £40,000 plus a 20% performance bonus and comprehensive benefits.

Detailed Job Description

As a Data Centre Engineer at Aspirecom, you will take full operational ownership of physical-layer deployment, network equipment staging, and structured cabling maintenance across major data center facilities in London such as Telehouse, Equinix, or Digital Realty. Your day-to-day responsibilities include installing, commissioning, and decommissioning server racks and network hardware, running and testing copper and fiber cables, and carrying out physical-layer fault diagnostics using OTDRs and power meters. You will install wireless access points, support core network engineering teams with remote-hands assistance, and maintain meticulous asset and cabling documentation. Furthermore, you will adhere to strict health and safety protocols while operating independently across live customer and data center sites.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install, commission, and decommission server racks, network equipment, and associated hardware across data centers and customer sites.
  • Run, lace, terminate, and test structured copper and fiber optic cabling adhering to industry standards.
  • Perform physical-layer fault finding and diagnostic testing using optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDRs) and power meters.
  • Provide expert remote-hands support for internal and external network engineering teams during maintenance and deployment windows.
  • Install, configure, and validate wireless access points and customer premises equipment (CPE).
  • Support large-scale infrastructure migrations, equipment swaps, and scheduled facility maintenance rotations.
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive physical infrastructure documentation, patch schedules, and cable routing logs.
  • Work safely and independently within live customer environments, data centers, and carrier points of presence (PoPs).
Required Qualifications & Skills
  • Minimum of 2+ years of professional hands-on experience as a field engineer, telecoms technician, or data center installation engineer.
  • Strong practical knowledge of structured copper cabling, UTP/STP termination, and cable testing methodologies.
  • Demonstrated experience with rack-and-stack installations, hardware provisioning, and physical cable management.
  • Excellent attention to detail, strong independent problem-solving skills, and self-management capabilities.
  • Valid full UK driving licence for frequent travel across London data centers and customer sites.
  • Mandatory eligibility to work permanently in the United Kingdom.
  • Professional communication and interpersonal skills for effective customer-facing support.
  • Strong commitment to health, safety, and operational governance in mission-critical environments.
Nice-to-Have Skills
  • Hands-on experience with fiber optic splicing, fusion splicing, and optical testing.
  • Prior working experience within tier-one colocation data center facilities such as Telehouse, Equinix, or Digital Realty.
  • Familiarity with basic enterprise networking concepts (switching, patching, patch panel organization).
  • Previous experience providing remote-hands support for managed service providers (MSPs) or network operators.
  • Relevant trade or technical certifications in structured cabling or fiber optics (e.g., BICSI installer credentials).
