Job description

Join National Gas and help be the energy behind the change.

National Gas is responsible for operating and maintaining Britain's national gas transmission network, helping to keep the lights on, businesses running and homes warm.

We manage the critical infrastructure that safely and reliably transport gas across Great Britain, supporting the energy security that millions of people depend on every day.

While delivering for Britain today, we're also preparing for tomorrow. Through innovation, investment and the development of future energy infrastructure, we're helping to create a cleaner and more sustainable energy system for generations to come.

As a graduate, you'll be given meaningful responsibility from the start, supported to develop professionally, and empowered to contribute to projects that have a real impact on the nation's energy future. Whether you're helping to solve complex challenges, driving innovation or supporting teams to deliver essential services, you'll play an important role in an organisation with genuine purpose.

Join us and help shape the future of energy.

About The Role

As a Data & Insights Graduate, you'll help teams across our Scotland & North region use data to make better decisions and improve how we operate. Working as part of the Planning & Performance team, you'll gain hands‑on experience using data to solve real business challenges and support the delivery of essential energy infrastructure.

You’ll work with information from different systems and sources to spot patterns, identify opportunities for improvement and help answer key business questions. Along the way, you’ll develop reports, dashboards and insights that help colleagues understand performance and make informed decisions.

One of the best parts of the role is the variety. You’ll work with teams across engineering, project delivery, safety, finance, commercial and more, giving you a broad understanding of how different parts of the business work together and how data helps keep things running smoothly.

Throughout the programme, you’ll build practical skills in data analysis, visualisation and business intelligence tools, while contributing to projects that make a real difference. You’ll be supported to learn, develop your confidence and grow your technical skills in a collaborative environment.

You’ll have the chance to develop both your technical and people skills, working with colleagues from different teams and backgrounds, within a fast‑paced operational environment. We value fresh perspectives, so you’ll be encouraged to ask questions, bring new ideas and help us find better ways of doing things.

About You

To thrive as a Data and Insights Graduate at National Gas, you’ll have a genuine interest in working with data, solving problems and uncovering insights that help others make informed decisions. You’ll be naturally curious and analytical, comfortable exploring information, challenging assumptions and identifying opportunities for improvement.

You’ll have the opportunity to take ownership of analytical tasks and reporting activities, developing your skills in data analysis, business intelligence, stakeholder engagement and communication. Working with colleagues across the business, you’ll help turn complex data into meaningful insights that support both operational and strategic decision‑making.

We need someone who combines strong attention to detail with a proactive approach to learning. You’ll be able to communicate information clearly, build positive relationships and collaborate effectively with a range of teams and stakeholders.

An eagerness to understand how the business operates and an enthusiasm for developing new skills and technologies will help you succeed in this role and make a meaningful contribution from day one.

We celebrate the different experiences our colleagues bring to our organisation and strongly encourage applicants of all backgrounds to apply.

What You’ll Need

You’ll need a degree in a relevant area. It could be anything related to:

  • Data Science
  • Mathematics
  • Statistics
  • Computer Science
  • Economics
  • Engineering

You’ll be able to demonstrate experience analysing data and drawing conclusions through academic study, work experience, placements or personal projects.

We’re particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Strong numerical thinking
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Effective communication and presentation skills
  • Confidence using Microsoft ExcelThe ability to engage and collaborate with a range of stakeholders

Experience with at least one analytical, visualisation or programming tool would be beneficial. Knowledge of Power BI, SQL, DAX, Python, data modelling, data governance or workflow automation would be advantageous but is not essential.

A good application will include a cover letter to help us understand why you’re a great fit for the role. Be sure to include any other relevant experience or university modules.

Studies suggest that women tend to apply only if they meet 100% of the criteria. If you resonate with our mission, the role excites you and your skills align, we encourage you to apply.

There will also be opportunities to visit operational sites and meet colleagues from across the Scotland and North Region as part of your development.

You’ll start in a large cohort of other graduates and apprentices, where you’ll attend an in‑person induction in early September 2027, fostering strong workplace relationships that will build the foundation of your future networks.
