Job description

Join National Gas and help be the energy behind the change.

National Gas is responsible for operating and maintaining Britain's national gas transmission network, helping to keep the lights on, businesses running and homes warm.

We manage the critical infrastructure that safely and reliably transports gas across Great Britain, supporting the energy security that millions of people depend on every day.

While delivering for Britain today, we’re also preparing for tomorrow. Through innovation, investment and the development of future energy infrastructure, we’re helping to create a cleaner and more sustainable energy system for generations to come.

As a graduate, you’ll be given meaningful responsibility from the start, supported to develop professionally, and empowered to contribute to projects that have a real impact on the nation’s energy future. Whether you’re solving complex challenges, driving innovation or delivering essential services, you’ll play an important role in an organisation with genuine purpose.

Join us and help shape the future of energy.
About The Role

Join our Planning & Performance team in the East Region and help us make better use of data to improve the way we work. You’ll work closely with colleagues across the business, using data and digital tools to support decision‑making, improve processes and provide valuable insights that help drive performance.

As a Data & Insights Graduate, you’ll gain hands‑on experience working with data, reporting tools and digital technologies. You’ll support the creation of dashboards and reports, help maintain accurate data, and contribute to projects that improve how information is used across the region.

Day‑to‑day, you could be:

  • Helping to create and improve dashboards and reports.
  • Reviewing data to identify trends, patterns and opportunities for improvement.
  • Checking and maintaining the quality of data used by the business.
  • Supporting colleagues to make the best use of digital tools and technologies.
  • Gathering feedback from users and helping improve existing processes.
  • Working with teams across the business to understand challenges and explore data‑driven solutions.

Throughout the programme, you’ll build a strong foundation in data analysis, reporting, digital tools and continuous improvement. You’ll develop problem‑solving, communication and stakeholder management skills while learning how data can support better decisions and improve business performance.

About You

We’re looking for someone who is curious, motivated and excited by the potential of data and technology. You don’t need to be an expert from day one, but you should enjoy solving problems, learning new skills and finding better ways of doing things.

You’ll be someone who:

  • Enjoys working with data and turning information into useful insights.
  • Pays attention to detail and takes pride in producing high‑quality work.
  • Likes solving problems and exploring ways to improve processes.
  • Is comfortable learning new technologies and tools.
  • Works well with others and can communicate ideas clearly.
  • Takes ownership of their work and is keen to learn from new experiences.

A standout candidate will be naturally inquisitive, enjoy spotting patterns in information and be enthusiastic about using data and technology to make a difference. They’ll be organised, proactive and eager to develop both their technical and professional skills.

We celebrate the different experiences our colleagues bring to our organisation and strongly encourage applicants of all backgrounds to apply.

What You’ll Need

You hold or are on track to achieve a degree in a subject that develops strong analytical and problem‑solving skills. Suitable degree disciplines include:

  • Data Science
  • Mathematics
  • Statistics
  • Computer Science
  • Economics
  • Engineering
  • Or another numerate or analytical subject

We’re interested in your potential and transferable skills as much as your academic background. A strong application may include examples of:

  • Working with data or numerical information.
  • Using evidence to solve problems or make recommendations.
  • Completing analytical projects, coursework or research.
  • Collaborating with others to achieve a common goal.
  • Using Excel or other tools to organise, analyse or present information.

An interest in data, reporting, technology and continuous improvement will help you succeed in this role. Experience with tools such as Power BI, Power Apps or Copilot is beneficial but not essential, as you’ll have the opportunity to develop these skills throughout the programme.

A good application will include a cover letter explaining why this role interests you and highlighting any relevant university projects, modules, work experience or extracurricular activities that demonstrate your skills and potential.

Studies suggest that women tend to apply only if they meet 100% of the criteria. If you resonate with our mission, the role excites you and your skills align, we encourage you to apply.

The Essentials

This is an 18-month fixed-term graduate programme. You must have the right to work in the UK for the duration of the programme. All participants on our Graduate Scheme are subject to National Security Vetting (NSV). Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain Security Clearance (SC) throughout their employment. For further information, visit GOV.UK (UK Security Vetting: Clearance Levels).

Throughout the programme, you’ll spend time working with colleagues across the business, giving you exposure to different teams and areas of National Gas. While you’ll mainly be based at our Peterborough office, there may be occasional visits to operational sites and meetings within the region to support your learning and development. You will not need to have driving licence or personal vehicle to be considered for this role.

What You Can Expect From Us

You’ll receive a range of benefits that reward your great work.

  • Starting annual salary of £34,646, with annual performance‑based increases
  • A generous holiday allowance of 26 days plus statutory bank holidays, with the option to buy and sell additional days (capped at 5 days)
  • 2 paid days each financial year to volunteer for a worthwhile cause
  • A generous pension scheme with a double‑match contribution – if you contribute 6%, we’ll contribute 12%, helping you build a strong financial future
  • Professional development and career progression
  • Employee assistance programme offering free confidential professional counselling 24 hours per day

At National Gas, we pride ourselves on a supportive and collaborative work environment. We understand the importance of maintaining a healthy work‑life balance and support our employees in achieving it. We strive to create an inclusive environment where everyone can perform at their best, where every team member feels valued and supported.

You’ll be mentored by experienced professionals and have opportunities to work on impactful projects. We ensure that you gain hands‑on experience, with opportunities for career advancement and professional development.

We encourage all graduates to take ownership of their journey. You’ll strive to grow and develop, taking advantage of all that National Gas has to offer.

The ‘nice to knows’

You’ll mainly be based at our Peterborough office, with the flexibility to work from home as part of our hybrid working approach. We believe some of the best learning happens when working alongside colleagues, so you’ll spend regular time in the office building relationships, developing your skills and gaining hands‑on experience. There will also be opportunities to visit operational sites and meet colleagues from across the East Region as part of your development.

You’ll start in a large cohort of other graduates and apprentices, where you’ll attend an in‑person induction in early September 2027, fostering strong workplace relationships that will build the foundation of your future networks.

Your next steps…

You’ll be offered additional support and guidance throughout the application process by our Early Careers team. Eligible applications will be reviewed by a human, every step of the way.

You’re only able to apply for one of our graduate schemes, so please consider this carefully. When reviewing your application, if we feel you might be a good fit for something else, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Following a successful online application, you’ll be invited to complete an online assessment. Candidates who progress to the next stage will then be invited to a virtual solo interview. The final stage of the process is an in‑person Assessment Centre in December or January at our Peterborough Office.

Applications close on Sunday 8th November 2026. Each year, we receive a large volume of applications, so we’d encourage you to apply early.

At National Gas we value everyone’s unique contributions and perspectives. If you require reasonable adjustments to complete the application process, please contact us at earlycareers@nationalgas.com
