Legislation.gov.uk is a vital resource that has transformed public access to legislation in the UK, making the statute book accessible to millions who need to read, quote, or cite legislation.
The National Archives, as the King’s Printer of Acts of Parliament, the King’s Printer for Scotland, and the Government Printer for Northern Ireland, has statutory obligations to register, publish, and make available legislation produced by the UK and Scottish Parliaments, the Welsh Senedd, the Northern Ireland Assembly, and the Governments of the four nations. These responsibilities are managed by the Legislation Services team at The National Archives. We oversee legislation.gov.uk, the official repository of enacted and revised UK legislation, and the only comprehensive free-to-use source of updated UK legislation.
Open data is central to our legislation services. We curate and create legislation data that is a valuable public asset, including document data in XML, graph-based data in RDF, and website usage data. We also hold extensive metadata about legislation, such as amendments, applications, bibliographic information, and exhaust data from publishing and website operations.
The team is focused on enhancing this service, especially our data offerings. We seek a data developer to join the Legislation Services Team and develop their data skills. Your main responsibilities will include improving legislation data, creating new datasets from legislation texts, and exploring ways to organize and deliver data that improve accuracy for reuse and facilitate AI consumption. You will contribute to a service utilized by data re-users, including academics, researchers, and innovators in Law Tech.
This role is suitable for someone motivated to make public records accessible, enjoys working openly within a multidisciplinary agile team, and is passionate about making legislation available as data to foster innovation.
Key skills include familiarity with XML and RDF, understanding of legislation document structures and schemas, proficiency in at least one modern programming language, and an interest in cloud computing. Experience with AI and prompt engineering for data processing is advantageous. A commitment to continuous learning and skill development is essential.
This is a full-time position. Requests for part-time, flexible working, or job sharing will be considered, subject to operational needs.
The role involves a mix of onsite and remote work, with a requirement to travel to our Kew site at least 60% of the time.
