Job Description

Summary

Historic England are excited to be seeking a Data Analyst Apprentice. This is rare, exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to achieve a Level 4 Data Analyst Apprenticeship qualification, working within our Analytics team.

With a Data Analyst apprenticeship, you will learn “on the job” how to analyse data managed by Historic England relating to the historic environment and the heritage sector as well as relevant data provided by external organisations.

This role includes working with spatial data in GIS, structured data in databases and unstructured data, to answer internal and external enquiries as well as provide insights to inform policy decisions. You will also liaise directly with internal and external customers as well as other stakeholders.

The Level 4 Data Analyst Apprenticeship is offered as a 18 month Fixed Term Contract. The location of this role is National where we offer hybrid working, you will be based in one of our following offices and from home - Newcastle, York, Manchester, Birmingham, Swindon, Bristol, Portsmouth (Fort Cumberland) and Cambridge

What you will be doing

You will be working towards completion of your Data Analyst apprenticeship over the course of 18 months. 80% of your time will be spent in the workplace, and 20% of your time will be spent “off the job”, completing a training programme specially designed for your apprenticeship, delivered with our training partner. This training will be delivered in the form of online learning through lectures and tutorials.

As a Data Analyst Apprentice, you will be based in the Analytics Department and will primarily be developing your role in the Data Hub team; however, over the course of your apprenticeship you will spend dedicated time with other teams working with data across the organisation.

The main duties and areas of responsibility for your role are listed below. This is a training position, so you will not be expected to be able to do all of these things straight away.

1. Participating in discussions regarding requests for analytical work on sourcing data, data processing and presentation, as well as any ethical and regulatory issues involved.

2. Working with colleagues to source, combine and clean data to use it for analysis.

3. Working with colleagues to undertake data analysis using a variety of tools and platforms including GIS, Microsoft products and specialist data manipulation tools.

4. Work with colleagues to present the results of analytical work in a variety of formats e.g. dashboards, reports and web maps depending on the audience.

5. Working with specialists responsible for managing the information systems used by Historic England including GIS and those responsible for managing data standards for the heritage sector.

6. Undertake any administrative functions required to support analysis and the work of the team generally.

7. Practice continuous self-learning to keep up to date with technological developments to enhance relevant skills and take responsibility for own professional development.

A key element of your apprenticeship will be the development of a Portfolio of Evidence of your on-the-job work and training. As you progress you will add pieces of evidence to your portfolio that you can use to demonstrate the relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours required for this apprenticeship. Pieces of evidence are things like work products, case studies, reports on professional activities, meetings or project work.

What will you learn

Over 18 months you will undertake a taught programme of training (20% of your time) delivered by tutors from your training provider, in partnership with experts from across Historic England. This will give you helpful background heritage knowledge and valuable skills that you will be able to use and apply at work and will help you understand the bigger picture of Historic England’s work. The programme is taught through a mixture of lectures, workshops, site visits, e-learning, assignments and projects and covers things such as:

Identifying data sources to meet the organisation's requirement, using evidence-based decision making to establish a rationale for inclusion and exclusion of various data sets and models. The fundamentals of archaeological, landscape and architectural history.

Liaising with clients and colleagues from other areas of the organisation to establish reporting needs and deliver insightful and accurate information.

How to collect, compile and, if needed, cleanse data, such as sales figures, Digital Twins etc. solving any problems that arise, to or from a range of internal and external systems.

How to produce performance dashboards and reports in the Visualisation and Model Building Phase.

How to support the organisation by maintaining and developing reports for analysis to aid with decisions and adhering to organisational policy/legislation.

Produce a range of standard and non-standard statistical and data analysis reports in the Model Building phase.

How to Identify, analyse, and interpret trends or patterns in data sets.

How to draw conclusions and recommend an appropriate response, offer guidance or interpretation to aid understanding of the data.

How to summarise and present the results of data analysis to a range of stakeholders, making recommendations.

How to provide regular reports and analysis to different management or leadership teams, ensuring data is used and represented ethically in line with relevant legislation (e.g. GDPR which incorporates Privacy by Design).

How to ensure data is appropriately stored and archived, in line with relevant legislation e.g. GDPR.

What we are looking for

You will demonstrate an interest in data, information and digital technology.

You will be able show you are well-organised with excellent attention to detail.

You have previous experience of using Microsoft Office products in particular Word and Excel.

You can demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills

You are curious and have a desire to learn continuously.

Please ensure you highlight your experience, skills and capabilities based on the above criteria in your online application.
