About the role:
Dealing effectively with the City’s waste is a Council priority, and the Waste Management Service is committed to ensuring that we maximise recycling, minimise landfill and recover value from all our waste. We are looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Data Support Officer into our Contracts and Performance Team to help us achieve this aim.
Key areas of work will include:
- Supporting colleagues in data management and analysis for the Council’s internal and statutory data and performance management
- Working with Excel, primarily on macro-based spreadsheets to compile performance data for waste management, such as recycling rates, and reporting this data internally and externally to DEFRA and the Environment Agency. This includes using Waste Data Flow, a system developed by DEFRA for waste reporting.
- Understanding and operating the Council’s internal Waste Management System, Collective. Training will be provided if needed.
- Liaising with waste management teams and finance to verify data, manage data issues, and manipulate data to identify discrepancies and solutions.
- Providing reports for managers and external bodies.
Flexibility in supporting other teams within the Department is required to manage priorities and deadlines. The role is based at Newmarket House, Cross Green, with a 37-hour workweek.

Job purpose
To provide administration, support, and maintenance of ICT applications within the Contracts and Performance Team, focusing on data analysis and reporting for development and improvement projects.
Responsibilities
- Support the development, support, and maintenance of Environmental Services information systems.
- Assist in delivering technical improvements and troubleshooting.
- Manage change within technical and business environments.
- Provide reports, data, and information as required.
- Support project work packages, ensuring delivery on time, within budget, and to standard.
- Demonstrate products to various audiences.
- Organize administrative systems and contribute to support services development.
- Monitor and evaluate systems and processes.
- Develop relationships with stakeholders.
- Maintain record/information systems and provide customer service.
- Analyze data, produce reports, and advise on complex issues.
- Conduct research to inform decisions.
- Ensure compliance with policies on child protection, inclusion, health, safety, confidentiality, and data protection.
- Participate in training and development activities.
Qualifications
- Desirable: ECDL, GCSE or similar ICT qualification.
Essential requirements
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and environmental services IT systems.
- Ability to produce accurate documents and handle complaints and requests.
- Good numeric and literacy skills.
- Ability to develop staff and provide flexible, responsive service.
- Effective communication skills, including handling sensitive information.
- Ability to prioritize and produce reports and data.
- Responsible attitude and knowledge of office procedures, financial regulations, and IT systems.
