Job description

It is essential that you hold the NHSCSP Certificate of Competence for this role and can demonstrate recent experience in NHSCSP Cervical Screening.

To participate in the day-to-day cervical screening workload of the Cytology laboratory.

To primary screen and rapid pre-view sufficient number of cervical smears per annum to achieve minimum target set by National Health Service Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCSP).

To undertake history checking of NHSCSP request forms.

To undertake manual reporting using the laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

To participate in non-gynae preparation.

  • Primary screen and rapid review cervical cytology samples to provide a high-quality service by adhering to the standards of the NHSCSP.
  • Issue negative and inadequate diagnostic reports.
  • Refer difficult and abnormal cases, suggesting a diagnostic result, for a second opinion.
  • Manage own daily workload to ensure sensitivity, specificity, and annual screening workload figures as recommended by the NHSCSP are maintained.
  • Undertake non-gynae preparation.
  • Be proficient at entering result data into the Pathology IT system and interrogate the system to access patient information relating to their cytology/histology history.
  • Assist BMS staff with collation of statistical data.
  • Participate in internal and external Quality Assurance schemes, including the annual National EQA scheme assessment.
  • Observe all departmental Health and Safety policies and COSHH regulations for staff safety and legal compliance.
  • Continue professional development, including mandatory 3-yearly updates at an accredited Cytology Training Centre.
  • Assist with general laboratory/MLA duties, including demonstrating cytology practice to visiting Practice Nurses as part of their training.
