Job description

Job Overview

The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) is seeking a Trainee Cyber Security Analyst to join our Cyber Security team. Cyber Security is a vital part of SPS’s Digital Services department, especially as we expand our digital footprint and transition services to the cloud. The apprentice will work primarily within the Network and Security team, collaborating with Systems and Field Support sections.

The role involves working with vulnerability scanning and monitoring tools, with prior experience in these areas considered advantageous. We offer a hybrid working model, combining remote work and office presence in Edinburgh, with time allocated for university studies.

Primary Responsibilities
  1. Assist the Digital Services team in designing, implementing, and integrating monitoring and analysis systems.
  2. Perform log analysis, utilizing automation where possible.
  3. Investigate security breaches and cyber security incidents.
  4. Support the operation and management of information security systems.
  5. Provide in-house Cyber Security assistance.

As a Graduate Apprentice, you will study towards a BEng (Hons) in Cyber Security at Edinburgh Napier University, balancing work and study (approximately 80% work, 20% university). This integrated program allows practical skills to be directly applied to coursework, leading to an honours degree in four years.

The course covers fundamental knowledge such as encryption and authentication, with practical lab-based experiences. Initial training includes principles of security and digital forensics, progressing to applying professional standards in software analysis, design, testing, and evaluation.

Entry Requirements
  • Four SQA Highers at Grade BBBB (or equivalent), including Maths, Statistics, or Physics, with National 5 grade C in Maths/Lifeskills Maths/Applications of Maths and English if not taken at Higher.
  • A Foundation Apprenticeship in IT: Software Development at SCQF Level 6 plus two SQA Highers at Grade BB.
  • A Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Levels 6-7 in an ICT/Digital discipline.
  • HNC or HND in an unrelated discipline plus Higher Maths, Statistics, or Physics at Grade B.
  • Sufficient recognition of prior learning (RPL) through industry experience and qualifications, considered individually.

Applicants must provide proof of qualifications to meet university requirements. Advanced entry into Year 2 or 3 is possible with suitable qualifications and RPL evidence.

SPS recruitment follows the Competencies for Success Framework, assessing key behaviors relevant to the role.
