The team…
You will be part of the Council’s Cyber Security Team, which is responsible for safeguarding our digital infrastructure and ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of our information systems.
The team designs, implements, and manages a robust cyber security program aimed at protecting the Council’s information assets from evolving cyber threats.
About the role…
We’re looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Senior Cyber Security EngineerAnalyst to join our Cyber Security team. In this pivotal role, you’ll be responsible for safeguarding the council’s email communications by managing and enhancing the security infrastructure within our Microsoft 365 environment.
You’ll lead the configuration, monitoring, and continuous improvement of our email security posture – ensuring that all inbound and outbound communications are protected against threats, compliant with regulations, and encrypted where necessary.
What You’ll Be Doing:
Take ownership of email security across the council’s Microsoft 365 platform, with a focus onMicrosoft Defender for Office 365.
Configure and maintainSPF,DKIM, andDMARCto ensure email authenticity and prevent spoofing.
Manage and supportemail encryption solutions, includingMicrosoft Purview Message EncryptionandEgress Secure Email, to protect sensitive data.
Develop and enforce policies fordata loss prevention (DLP),automated threat response, andsafe email handling.
Monitor email traffic and threat intelligence dashboards to detect, investigate, and respond to suspicious activity.
Collaborate with IT and security teams to align email protection strategies with broader cybersecurity goals.
Provide expert guidance and training to staff on secure email practices and threat awareness.
Maintain clear documentation and reporting to support compliance, audits, and continuous improvement.

Email authentication protocols: SPF, DKIM, DMARC
Encryption tools: Microsoft 365 Message Encryption, Egress Secure Email
What We’re Looking For:
Strong hands-on experience managing email security in Microsoft 365.
Deep understanding of email authentication and encryption standards.
Familiarity with Microsoft Defender for Office 365 and its advanced threat protection features.
Experience with encryption platforms like Microsoft Purview Message Encryption and Egress.
Analytical mindset with the ability to respond quickly to emerging threats.
Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to problem-solving.

You’ll be paid a competitive salary £37,938 to £40,476 pa

You will receive an annual leave entitlement starting at 28 days per year (pro-rata for part time employees) rising to 32, 2 of which may be fixed by the council at any time. You also have the chance to buy up to 10 additional holidays per year.
